Hello all,
I dont normally write reviews, but I have been so pleased with my purchase that I decided to write about it and maybe help someone else looking to purchase find some ease of mind. I did not buy a ds pc to play games though, I needed a high end system for modeling/ texturing in programs like maya, modo, photoshop, and sculpting in zbrush for feature films. I've worked on cg heavy films as well as games so I know the kind of processing power needed to create hero digital assets. I did however build a typical gaming rig. Why? Well at work we use quaddro 5800 cards and while they are great for the work we do, I personally dont find the price vs performance ratio worth the money. That said, my new rig runs heavy scene files (in afformentioned apps) smoothly which my work pc would struggle with, which is a last gen dual quad core xeon with 8 gigs ram and a quaddro 5800 card. I am not writing this to discourage anyone from building a ds workstation, but to let others like me who cant afford to throw 3k at a graphics card that these gaming rigs work great too. There aren't many reviews out there about using these gaming cards in place of quaddros. (Ill add pics to this later, although they wont be anything fancy as I didnt get any lighting or liquid cooling, just a well constructed and planned out build.) My ds rig: Chassis Model: Cooler Master HAF 932 Processor: Intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D Premium SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 12GB DDR3 1600MHz Corsair Dominator DHX (High-Performance) Power Supply: 1000W Corsair (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) (SATA) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: 1x (1TB Western Digital (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) (SATA) Video Card(s): 1x EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 1.5GB Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D14 Extreme Performance Edited by JStones - 21 Apr 2010 at 11:50am |
