New desktop for young family

Hey guys,

I'm in need of a new desktop for a young family of five. No heavy duty editing or major league stuff right now. General web stuff, some music & pictures, and hopefully some gaming & video streaming and downloading as well. We're not total techies, but would like something upgradeable. I'd prefer not buying a new PC every few years. No need for a monitor, mouse, or keyboard. What do you think? I appreciate your input.

1. What is your budget?
2. What is the resolution of the monitor you plan on using with the system?

Wow, I'm surprised to see that was my 1st post! I did a lot of reading here on the forums last year, but with too many other things coming up, put off buying a new PC. I definitely thought I had posted a couple of times.

Anyway, my monitor is 1600x1900. I'm sticking with it at least for the short term. My budget is around $1500 at the top end. I don't need speakers or keyboard/mouse. I should have posted this info in my 1st post, but was in a rush. Thanks for your time and effort, Tidgxor.

I'm not familiar with that resolution, so I'm guessing a 23" monitor or so??
 
For $1500 check out the ODE 1, a great price for i7-2600k cpu and gtx 570 graphics card.  
 
Anything less like Epoch 2 or Dreadnought 2 would give you the i5-2500k and gtx 560 gpu. 
 
The gtx 570 is about 20% better in gaming than the 560, but the 560 still gives games like BF3 on medium to high and Skyrim on ultra.
 
Not much upgrade potential with ODE 1 because of motherboard and power supply, but a better gpu down the road it could do.
 
The Dreadnought 2 has more upgrade potential with better mobo and psu, but has the less cpu and gpu.
 
Still think the ODE 1 is the way to go for your budget.

That's a 20" Acer monitor. I would probably hold off until summer before upgrading the monitor to something bigger with higher res.
