I just ordered my system from Digital Storm this morning. Other than one Gateway 486 I got a heck of a deal on, I've built all my own machines stretching back to my first "real" computer, a 386-40.
My current machine is finally dying after almost 12 years. I've upgraded everything except the CPU, but it appears the motherboard is dying. It's time... I just don't have the time or energy to research the difference between all the new components. Special shoutout to Juan at DS customer service who made some suggestions and gave me good reasons why. One of the very few times a company CS has offered suggestions that reduced the price of the product. What did I order, you ask? because I know you all love such things. Chassis Model: Digital Storm Lynx Processor: Intel Core i5-12600K (4.9 GHz Turbo) (16-Thread) (10-Core) 3.7 GHz (Alder Lake) Motherboard: ASUS Prime Z690-P D4 (Wi-Fi) (Intel Z690 Chipset) (Up to 3x PCI-E Devices) (No SLI) (DDR4) System Memory: 32GB DDR4 3200MHz Digital Storm Performance Series Power Supply: 850W Corsair RMx Series (Modular) (80 Plus Gold) Optical Drive: External USB - DVD/CD 8x Multi-Drive (Writes and Reads DVDs, CDs) Storage Set 1: 1x SSD M.2 (2TB Samsung 980 PRO) (NVM Express) Graphics Card(s): 1x GeForce RTX 3070 8GB (VR Ready) Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Digital Storm Vortex Liquid CPU Cooler (Dual Fan) (Fully Sealed + No Maintenance) My computer sits under my desk, no lighting needed. And yes, I still use CD-drive. Lots of k-pop albums aren't available streaming or digital. I'm still nervous about the liquid cooler and someone else building it. But DS had a lot of reviews, so I'm looking forward to it. |

Welcome to the DS Family! As a long term member of the "air cooling" club I appreciate your concern about the liquid cooling, but the closed-loop systems like what you've order have come a long way since their early days. Most likely you'll have a very similar experience to air cooling with that setup. One of my friends had their first liquid cooled system from DS (also closed loop) and they've said for them at least they feel like there's no appreciable difference in maintenance. Also fair about someone else building it, but the plus side to offloading the labor is that if something goes wrong DS has to fix it for you rather than you trying to figure it out yourself when you could be doing something more productive, like taking a nap. |

Agree with Tidgxor. I was an air cooler fan, Noctua, for many years and now have zero concern with AIO liquid coolers. Reliable, quiet , small vs Noctua. Liquid coolers do still have more that can go wrong than an air cooler, but reliability has improved a lot.
Nice build. The processor and 3070 are best bang for your buck for gaming . Have fun. |

Congratulations and welcome to DS. Closed loop liquid coolers are really almost as good as a good air cooler (Noctua comes to mind) and I say almost just because there is pump, in addition to the fan, which the air cooler does not have. Apart from that I echo Tidgxor and bprat22 in all respects. That's a very nice system. Enjoy and keep us posted. |

Thanks! That's what DS recommended. I still tend to think in old school "i7 must be better than i5", but that's not really true depending on what you do with it (apparently). I don't play the AAA to demand a 3080, but I want to try ray tracing in Minecraft and I'm looking forward to World of Warships with max settings. |

Congrats on the new system. I have been a Digital Storm customer over 12 years and just bought my 2nd system around Christmas. In the 12 years I have had the older one I only needed to replace a cooling fan and the machine still games pretty good. The new one was night and day in terms of performance. I think you will be blown away by how fast everything will run. It was a totally different and welcome experience for me upgrading after all these years.
Welcome to the Digital Storm Forum and you will find that the group really goes out of its way to help folks get the best out of their systems. Of course, a phone call to the Digital Storm Pro Tech Staff will always get you an answer to any questions that may come up as you settle in with your new and improved system. |

I just recently ordered my 3rd DS system (very similar to what you got). I’ve never had problems with this type of liquid cooling. Cheers!

Your system gets a thumbs-up from me. The 12600K is a monster for gaming, and an excellent choice. The i7s and above are overpowered at this stage, and a bit of a waste. As said, the the AIO coolers are very reliable.
You're going to really enjoy this! |

Ugh.
My machine has been in stress testing for almost two weeks. The 30 day Norton guarantee expired two days ago. |

And, as of last night, it is in packaging. Yay!
And, for those interested, I figured out that my current computer is an i7 2600k. So, a 10 generation jump in processors. |

This year, has been REALLY rough, I'm due for a good thing.
Wife had major surgery that put her out for about 8 weeks. Popped a water heater. Popped an AC unit (in July in Central Texas). Kitchen sink almost fell through the counter. Had to replace that faucet. I had one of my team quit the day he was supposed to lead a workshop. Two of the team got Covid, which caused me to go to Wyoming on less than a week's notice. And I'm going to Utah week after next. It's been a summer. |

I'm so very sorry to hear that. I hope all is doing as well as can be expected. Which part of Utah? I am quite familiar with most of the state. As for tough years, we lost my mother in Feb, a grandson in April and a forced early retirement for me shortly thereafter. I was in line to upgrade my DS system but had to cancel those plans. Quite a summer indeed. |

Ugh. Yeah, that's awful. Sorry.
I'll be in Salt Lake City. But just for 2 days and it will be "nice airport", "nice roads", "nice hotel" and back again. |

AFAIK, they're still working on the SLC expansion plans and some gates are a bit of a hike. Some family members I spoke to say they're experiencing a bit of a heatwave, but being from TX you'ld probably just laugh at them...
Take a few moments to look to the east at the serious wall of the Wasatch Mountains. One of the best views in SLC is the flat land leading up to the western edge of the Rockies. Having spent a bit of time there in TX I can say that y'all really don't know mountains like they grow in UT. ...and no, you'll not be saying 'nice roads' even once. All right. It's just 4 hours away by truck. They moved up the delivery date to tomorrow. Which means, I can download all my steam games Sunday night and then play all labor day!
Yay!! |
