Hi all, Im looking to get a new Ds custom built computer and have a few questions about the velox case, what cooler I should get for the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D, and what ssd/m.2 I should have put in the heatsink on the asus motherboard. My first question is the velox case is marketed as a good airflow case, is this true? I feel as though it would not be with the gpu upside down. My second is would the Noctua NH-D15 chromax.black be enough to cool the AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D? I really dont want to get an aio watercooler if I dont have to. Third Question, if I were to get a second SSD M.2 (1Tb Samsung 970 EVO PLUS) just for the OS and basic stuff like google, discord and drivers would that be worth it or just get a SSD (1TB Samsung 870 EVO) for that. If I were to get a 1Tb Samsung 970 EVO PLUS, should that go in the motherboard heatsink or the m.2 with all my games go in it? I appreciate the help!

The Velox is an excellent airflow case. The GPU being upside down is a great help, because the fans point up and out the top of the case. Heat rises. The Noctua is the best choice for all CPU cooling purposes. It performs as well as the all-in-one liquid coolers, and it's more reliable and repairable. An AIO must be replaced. A Noctua, you replace a fan or two, and it's good for another seven years. You have your SSDs backwards. The OS always is installed on Storage Set 1 by default, and you always want your OS on your fastest storage. That's the Samsung 990 PRO. As for the question re: 970 Evo Plus vs 870 EVO, the 970 is 6 times faster. You pick.
IDK what you want this computer for, but if it's gaming, you want an Intel i5-13600KF. It's cheaper and has 14 cores instead of 8. There's nothing wrong with the AMD proc, but it's not faster, and costs more. Then you want no more than 32GB of RAM. No game on earth would benefit from 64 GB of RAM. If it's productivity in processing huge files in addition to gaming, you probably know what you want. ![]() Edited by Cretae - 27 Sep 2023 at 10:13pm |

I thought that the fans on gpus suck air in, not blow air out. As for what games use 64 gb of ram, star citizen, DCS, and any rts. as for theoretical, if I were to get another 970(1 tb) instead of the 990 and put the os on that, should that go in the motherboard heatsink or the 970 2 tb gaming one?

Welcome. You are correct about the gpu fans. they blow air into the card, not out. That said, by being on top of the cpu, the heat generated by the gpu goes up and out of the case through the top, assisted by fans up there, if any. Plus, IMO the best part to look at the gpu is its bottom so...being upside down... The Noctua will cool as the best AIO so I would go with it. I like 1 TB for primary drive and OS and there is no 990Pro in that size so I would install the 1TB 980Pro as Primary and any SSD as secondary. Anything on the mobo will create heat. RAM is up to you. Some games are getting pretty heavy. Enjoy.

I agree the more compact 980 PRO is a good choice for primary drive. Prefer it over the 970 Evo Plus because it is nearly twice the read/write speed. Whichever M.2 drive is installed as your primary drive will be installed in your motherboard's M.2 slot designated #1. Additional storage, if an M.2 will go into the #2 slot. On the ASUS Prime B760M-A AX D5 (Wi-Fi) (Intel B760) for the 13600KF, they are both situated under the same heatsink cover.
If you stick to the slightly slower and more expensive AMD proc and board, your primary drive selection will still have the OS on it, and be installed in the heatsink slot.That board has 2 more M.2 slots without heatsinks, The first one of those will get your secodary storage. |

1) SSD: Go for a 4TB SSD if you want to install lots of games--or just a few heavily modded ones. My new Velox's 4TB SSD (Ryazan 7950X3D + RTX4070ti) is already 33% full from just installing Skyrim and FO4 and 2 other smaller games.
My regret is not ordering a second 2TB SSD for just storing mod downloads. 2) 64GB RAM is a good move, as setting a >48GB Pagefile (SSD space allocated as virtual RAM) is now standard for many/most system intensive games. 3) Cooling is tricky, as a 3-fan water cooler is indeed super efficient. Had a 2-fan cooler on my last DS rig--which died this summer after 3 years of very heavy pandemic playing--but because of mobo failure. How often you'll need to take your rig to the shop for a high-pressure cleaning becomes the issue. The only thing I'd change on my new Velox is swapping out the 2 x 3.5" top case fans for 2 or 3 x 5" fans. Eventually, DS will start to offer a case with detachable air filters for all intake fans. |

does the velox not have air filters? the customer support guy said it did, but he could be lying. also, with this set up, could i go for the cheaper 850 w psu or just go with the 1000w one as originally planed?

There are dust covers on the front and top fans. I have found that the only dust cover I really have to clean is the front, plus a little dust cleaning inside. Top dust cover never seems to get much dust, but I blow it out anyway.

On the Velox? I had a long look inside the case, and saw only the PSU filter as being removeable.
The water radiator assembly had none I could see--either anterior or posterior to the fan assembly. It has an exterior filter grill; but is not as finely meshed or removeable like the PSU filter (on the bottom of the case); which was the point of the thread. What I want from DS is a Velox-sized case, with a detachable air filter positioned anterior to the main intake fans (on the front of the case), that I could detach and clean just as I do the PSU filter on the bottom of the case. The top fans--which blow air up and out of the case, don't have detachable filters--only the top grill of the case. What case are you using? Edited by NubbyShober - 02 Oct 2023 at 3:04pm |

The Velox's front filter are behind the front cover which you must remove. It is held by small screws (one on each corner) on the side frame. If I remember, you have to remove the side panels to see them. Good luck.

@Ghost:
Determine the power requirements of your: CPU + GPU as they're the big draws. Cooling fans, Mobo, RAM, SSD's also pull power. Calculate it yourself; and then add at least 50w to your total to determine the PSU you need. DS software automatically tallies these figures; but I can't speak to how accurate they are. Also, if you think you'll want to later upgrade your CPU or GPU, factor that into your PSU choice. Otherwise, you'll need to buy a new PSU with that upgrade. |
