I'm finally getting around to upgrading my old PoS single core 2.4 gig dinosaur, was shopping around and found Digital Storm. All the reviews and testimonials about the customer service have sold me on this company, first and foremost I want a caring company that will help with any problems I have. A friend on a message board had gotten a system from here, so I decided to check it out. I'm building this primarily to play games, and have space/options for upgrading in the future should I want/need to.

I'm aiming to keep it around 3k to 3.4k, and with the discount DS is currently offering I've made this build for around 3,116.

Would just like a once over on the specs, I think it looks good and will do what I want it for, but getting a second opinion never hurts. I plan on ordering it before the week is over, and I fiddle around a little bit more with this setup if anything needs changing

Thank you, Ashandarei

changes I made --

1) i7 950 to 920... no reason to spend the extra $$ on the 950 when you can OC the 920
2) GTX 295 to 2x 275. 275s cost less and perform the same
3) changed the HDD back to original, this one is your call though. You can afford a smaller SSD or the velociraptor or wait for prices to drop on either one.

hold on, dinner, explain the rest in a few minutes ;p

alright...

4) 1200W psu to 1000W. for one, i doubt you'll need a 1200W psu, and if you did, I think you'd be better off with the other choice (only problem is it's very expensive). The 1000W corsair is, I believe, a better quality PSU than the 1200W Chieftec (I think that's what they're using). Again, the price is close so your call here.

5) 1600 mhz RAM to 1333. Unless you really "need" the 1600, the 1333 will serve you fine and save you 150 bucks.

6) coolermaster v8 to noctua nh-u12p. noctua will give better temps. Better yet, with your budget you can afford the frostbite system. your call.

7) OC on the 920. It's safe, and it will be faster than the 950 you had selected. Also, it's under warranty, so no worries about it blowing stuff up :)

8) 1050si to HAF. The 1050si is the worst of the full tower cases offered. If you were going for aesthetics, i'd suggest the 950si, but if you're going for best performance, get the HAF.

Also, if you go HAF make sure you get the right color fans. the default fan is red, so if you want blue you'd need to request that.

I think that covers all my changes... it's not a perfected build, but it's a better ballpark than where you were headed I believe. Let DST and the others chime in just to make sure...

Oh, and did i mention the build above is cheaper than yours even if you put the velociraptor back in? check it out. $3055 before discount with the velociraptor instead of the 500GB

I wasn't really sure about OC, cause I've never done it before and wanted to err on the side of being safe, I just don't really know much about it. I don't really plan on going too big for gaming resolution (I'm buying a new monitor after I get the rig, but current one is a tiny 19 inch I think, running 1024x768....yeah I know, it's low but it's worked fine for the last 4 years.) Want the system to last and wasn't sure what OC'ing would do to it, so I figured I didn't need it unless anyone can tell me whats up.

Also didn't want to go with liquid cooled cause I'm still rather new to that as well, and they can become rather pricey (I've got a decent budget, but still trying to wring out good prices.)  Thanks for the heads up on the Haf's default fan colors, and wanted the large power supply in case I wanted to upgrade later, to help make sure I had it covered.

Thanks for all the help, will post another config once I get more informed about the OC on the 920

2x275 will have ya covered for up to 1900x1200 or a 24" on average. Anything larger would require 3. 2x275 will work better as not all games can do SLI yet and the 275 would be stronger than a 295 in that regard, and will also yield better results in SLI mode.

OC'ing the system shouldn't do anything bad as DS plays it very safe and honestly the i7 line was designed for OC'ing. Especially the 920's as it's fairly common to see them at 3.5 to 3.8 ghz on air cooling after the OC is done.. and still be fully stable.

What's the primary uses for this computer btw? it'd be easier to help after we knew that.

Other notes, the LED fans chassis upgrade is kinda loud so be warned. Noctua is quieter and all around better than the V8 so go with that. Ignore velociraptors, SSD's are the future and FAR faster. Though they will get cheaper.

This'll allow maximum upgradeability and OC'ing safety. Water cooling should keep temps down on the processor if you're worried and the 2x275 should be fine on the HAF's air cooling alone. I included your choice of sound card but you don't really need it, onboard sound has jumped leaps and bounds from the old days and should be good enough. All up to you.

Keep the memory fan kit, you'll need it to cool the north bridge on the mobo.

If you want to cut price, drop the SSD and wait til next year first quarter to pick one up at a cheaper rate. You'll be fine in the interim with the standard 500 gb drive, 1 Tb is a pain to scan or defrag.

At the moment I play wow off and on, but looking to primarily game with this comp, fallout 3, left 4 dead, the new mechwarrior, Call of duty and other shooters, that'll be comming out and pretty much anything else for the next few years.

If I go with the overclocked 920, would I have to get the liquid cooled or would the noctura air cooler handle it? Just wary of LC because of my inexperience with it.

After doing alot of research (I don't think I haven't stopped googling, calling friends and asking questions for two weeks now), this is the current build I believe I'm most likely to purchase. I'm going to be receiving a 22'' Monitor from my father (he's upgrading, I'll take a free 1 year old 22 :P) so, didn't need to select one. I have a few questions I'm going to ask when I call and place my order sometime this weekend Sarah, but I don't think the spec is likely to change much from this.

I'd like to thank everyone who's been kind and helpfull, I'm incredibly excited and looking forward to this new PC! I'm still open to suggestions if you have anything else to suggest, but I'd like to keep the single GTX 295 in case I would like to upgrade to SLI, and get a larger monitor.

Ashandarei with all due respect, are you out of your mind or do like spending extra money where you see no performance gain and more heat?

2 x 275 cost less then 1 x 295 and out performs it in both games that support sli and games that don't. The same goes for 3 x 275 vs 2 x 295.

a 1200w psu, is not for regualr user, you have no need nor any performance to gain from it, what you will gain tho is some serious noise and lot of heat, both of which you don't want.

so, go with 2 x 275 and a 1000w psu, a 1000w psu can do both tri sli 275/285 or 2 x 295.

in short, this system will out perform the config you have listed and cost less and has room to be upgraded:

I changed the upgraded fans to zalman (no led) reason being the people that have gotten the led fans, say they are loud, but if you don't mind the noise put them back in my config.

change your light to red, cause the front fan of haf is red (the fan upgrade does not change the front fan)

Seriously, avoid the Velociraptor right now. Save up for an SSD if you're concerned about speed or just buy one now. The difference between an SSD and a velociraptor is the same as the difference between a Volvo and a fighter jet in speed.

The 1200W PC Power & Cooling power source is well beyond what you need and will add alot of heat and ALOT of noise. Stick with 1000W Corsair, it'll keep ya safe and stay upgradeable. Remember that upgrades aren't necessarily just adding things, they're replacing things so the 1000W power source is still well within upgradeability.

The 295 will not benefit you as much as you think. The numbers on the fact it's a dual GPU card are deceptive somewhat in that you think you are buying two cards better than a 275 when in fact you are buying a 280 and a 260. Stick with the 2 x 275.
