Topic: New Gaming PC, Please Review Posted: 30 Mar 2012 at 11:55am |
Hello all. The time has come for me to invest in a new computer. I went through and created an initial config. Please review and provide any thoughs; thanks.
1. Your Budget: under $4400 2. Expectations: Being able to play games (fps, rts, and mmo) with graphics turned up @ 1920 x 1080, readiness for sli and ivy bridge cpus last this year.
3. Usage: Mainly gaming (BF3, Diablo 3, etc), web surfing, maybe some 3d gaming.
4. Special Needs: none

Stage 2 cooling: I have selected the D14. Should I go for the H100 with the 3930k? How about even if I plan to go sli later this year; and maybe an ivy bridge upgrade next year.
I'm aware about the under 1.4 vcore, and getting the 200mm fans at the top of the case.

Hi 2nd2none06...Welcome to the forums.
This build is great. Just a couple of comments, because that's what we do. The X79 platform is not needed for gaming unless you plan on tri-sli, 3x gpu in the future. Nothing wrong with it, just not needed for gaming. The ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 with the i7-2600k would do it and be pcie 3.0 ready for ivy bridge. There is some concern right now that the X79 paltform isn't ready for ivy bridge, but most think they will fix it, but ..... For the X79 mobo with stage 2 oc'ing you do need to go H100 cooler, according to DS's testing. For the Z68 platform the D14 would work great. You don't need 16GB memory but the X79 config doesn't allow you to drop it to 8GB, but itis all gaming needs. Hope this helps and good luck. A little correction to my thoughts......for your added audio card you might want the X79 platform. Otherwise if you go sli, the second card will only have x4 lanes instead of x8 lanes, which would reduce it's performance. Z68 only has 16 lanes total and X79 has 40. With ivy bridge later this year, if you swapped the cpu, then the z68 might be ok, with ivy bridge doubling things up. Not 100% how this will work. Time will tell. Thanks for your help Bprat!
I have a question. Where can I find the i7-2600k and the ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 on the configuration page? Thanks. |

http://www.digitalstormonline.com/compspecialdeals.aspIt's the dreadnought level 3. Just change the cpu from i7-2700 to i7-2600k . The 2700k isn't worth the difference.

Until the price reduction Intel put out on 2700K, it's not worth it. Intel cut the difference to like $10, which isn't bad for another 100mhz, but not a deal-breaker either.
The Ivy Bridge-E chips currently has a forecast release of 1H 2013, if I remember correctly. That's a long time to wait for it, considering the moderate amount of performance gains and power reduction seen between the current Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge. I've also heard speculation on a site or two that Ivy Bridge-E won't fit the 2011 chipset either. While I'm pretty sure it's just rumors, I wouldn't be surprised if they tried to squeeze more power out of the Ivy Bridge architecture and bumped up the pin count. |

Here is my updated build; please provide any thoughts. I'm looking to order this week. What are your thoughts on integrated sound vs a sound card? Is there an impact on i7 cpu cycles when gaming with integrated audio? Will this mobo be compatible with the Ivy Bridge chips? I chose the the extreme-z cause it was rated the top gaming Z68 mobo. The 1200w PS is for maybe tri-sli. If not; will a 1050w PS work for this build? Thanks.

That build looks good.
The only reason for that mobo would be if you wanted to tri-sli in the future, otherwise the cheaper z68 v-pro gen would do. Normally the Z68 mobo's won't tri-sli without a big hit in lanes available (x8,x4,x4), but this board does have 4x PCIe x16 slots and a NVidia chipset to allow more pci lanes, supposedly(x8,x16,x16). I'm not sure of this, but reviews say yes. Not sure what you would need tri-sli, 3x 680's for, especially with you initial expectations. Sli gtx680's will play anything you throw at it on the 1920x1050 resolution. If you did tri-sli in the future there wouldn't be room on the mobo for the audio card, all pci's would be blocked. Plus the audio card does take lanes away from gpu's. For sli and audio card with your mobo doesn't seem to be a problem, but would be with the V-pro gen 3.(x8,x4,x4) This mobo is not listed as PCIe.3.0 support. http://event.asus.com/2011/mb/PCIe3_Ready/ Onboard audio is very good. Whether you need sound card depends on your setup. I'll let others comment on audio cards vs integrated. For sli, the 1050HX is all you need. The 1200W would be for tri-sli. You don't need 16GB ram for gaming, but you might have other needs. Alot depends on whether you need 3x 680's in the future. The rest of the build is right on. Hope this helps. So if I go with the ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 and SLI 680s, would the gpu lanes be x8 and x8?

Yes, for the gpu's without audio card. If you add the audio card into one of the pcie slots, then the gpu's and audio go x8,x4,x4.
