    Posted: 17 Mar 2011 at 6:06pm
Hello,

I am looking to purchase a new gaming rig with a budget of around $3500.  I am hoping the system will be able to run Rift, LoTRO, Crysis 2, and other current high graphic games at ultra settings.  I plan on using the computer for gaming, videos, music, and surfing.  I really want the computer to be upgradeable in the future.

I have read a couple discussions here on DS and have configured the following but would like your help and advice on cutting out unnecessary components without sacrificing too much performance... any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Benson

If you like the chassis you selected, and want a X58 based system, you should change your memory from 12GB to 6GB. The difference between the two, especially in gaming is not even noticeable. It will shave off a few hundred and bring you in your budget.

Other than that, it looks great!

Thank you for the response.  I will think about that.  My thinking is that maybe this year 6 GB is enough, but do you think next year games/applications will come out where I would need to upgrade the RAM anyway?  If not then I should definitely take it off, but if so then it might be worth it to have extra RAM.  What do you think?

Thanks,
Benson

RAM is a really easy upgrade to do, even as a total inside your PC's guts novice.

If you go that route, just ask them when you place the order, tell them you want 3X2GB DIMMs(assuming your aiming for the tripple channel), then you can later add another 3X2GB to the 3 remaining slots later on when you think you start to need it.

6GB is more then enough now, and its will be a few years before it won't.

What is the resolution you gonna be gaming at?

I am using 1920x1200 right now but would like to run at 2560x1600 at ultra settings and still maintain high fps.  I want to use top settings at all games at highest resolutions but without spending on parts that do not help that much Big%20Smile

a pc for 1900 x 1200 and for 2560 x 1600 are gonna be 2 different setup, also for 2560 x 1600 and what your are requesting, you might want tri sli.

if that is the case I would wait for the highend SB cpus that will be out Q4 of this year, the current SB cpus are better then the old ones (i7 9xx), but are not great for tri sli, the highend versions would be, I would hate to have you drop so much money on a i7 9xx weaker cpu, when the big boys will be out in a few month and be much more powerfull, I can't wait to see what a 6 core and * core SB will do, when the SB quad core is more powerful then the 980x/990x.

but if you don't want to wait we can go with the i7 9xx, just understand that you are getting a weaker cpu for the money.

DST4ME,

I've been going back and forth as well on whether I should wait mainly because I heard SSD drives will be much cheaper in Q4.  However, I read somewhere in this forum that the i7 9xx are plenty for gaming purposes, but do you think that in order to run 2500x1600 smoothly you would need Tri Sli as well as the new SB processors?

Why spend money on old platform, when for the same money you can get a faster/smarter brain for the pc?

As far as needing tri sli for that res, it depends on the game, some games will run great with dual sli and some won't.

Honestly if I were you I would not throw money at a old platform, when teh newer one is more powerful clock for clock.

do you need the new SB cpu to do tri sli or run smooth at 2560 x 1600? no, are you gonna get better performance for your money from the current/future SB cpus? yes.

DST4ME,

Just wondering if you were to choose a motherboard strictly for performance and price was not an issue, which one would you choose and why?

Thanks,
Benson

Right now it would depend on my needs, for gaming pc and sli here, I would choose deluxe mobo, cause it got everything I need, I'm not a fan of paying more for things I will never notice/use.

For my use that would be a different story.
