So I am looking for a new gaming desktop and I have maximum $2000 just for the desktop by itself. Currently I was thinking of just getting the ode at 1500 and then keeping the rest for later upgrades or maybe a better monitor. But I am still looking to get something a little bit better if at all possible.
I will pretty much only be using it for games, no video editing or anything like that. Mostly for rpgs/strategy games, so like Mass Effect/Diablo 3 and starcraft 2. I don't need a huge amount of storage space or an awesome sound card, main priority is its gaming capabilities. Edited by Cordacc - 07 Mar 2012 at 5:04pm |

Hi cordacc........welcome to the forum.......What size monitor and resolution do you plan on gaming with? Initially, I would say the ODE1 is great for your budget. Let us know monitor and res.

I would probably use a single 24 inch, but a 27 inch would be nice. And then hopefully 1980x1200 or 1920x 1080. but not sure how well that would work on a 27 inch.

Playing at that resolution on a 24" or even 27" monitor at 1920x1200 the ODE 1 would allow you to play most games on high settings, like BF3, MassEffect, etc. Some BF3 maps on medium. To Max out settings with AA set on high a sli, 2gpu, build would be needed for about $2300. To make it even more confusing, we could configure a system with better case, power supply, etc but the same gaming performance for $2000 as compared to ODE1. Depends on budget and expectations. Let us know and we' d be happy to show you configs.

so if i want anything better it would be more around $2300, What would be the difference between something around $2300 vs. the ode1. If it is much better then I could definitely go up to $2300. So i would love to see what I could get with $2300 then.

Better motherboard to sli and stage 2 overclock Better and more reliable psu, the HX series has 7 year warranty. Sli, 2 x gtx 570 for maxed out gaming on your 1920x1200 monitor Cpu cooler is the D14, the best air cooler and reliable. Stage 2 overclocking, to give the cpu added horsepower.. It's done safely by DS. This is more $$$ but it is better parts and better performance with upgrade potential You could compare this to ODE 3 at same price if you wanted SSD, but the psu and cpu cooler aren't as good. But ODE 3 is a geat deal for the price. Take a look and compare. Good Luck. I have to check out so see ya tomorrow. Others might help later if they can.

I personally like the 2500K for gaming a bit more than the 2600K, especially for budget builds. With plans to upgrade in the future, you can use the Z68 chipset and ASUS board when Ivy Bridge comes out in a few months, with a firmware upgrade from ASUS, and the $122 difference up front here will help offset the new CPU down the road. Most games out there don't benefit from having 4C/8T of the 2600K, and are much more GPU-bound, which the 2x 570s will deal with handily. =) Just my $0.02

So if i were to use the HafX case that is open would dust or other solids get stuck in there and disrupt anything? or does that not really happen. Also how much of a difference would a ssd drive actually make?

Hi don't have a SSD
The HafX case has dust filters over the intakes you can pop off and blow out once in a while. But like any gaming rig, just keep it off the floor where dust, cat hair and dirt like to linger and it will be no problem.

The only real difference in terms of noticeable performance is using an SSD as a boot drive. In terms of running applications like games for example, close to none (visible performance). That's why you have a 7200RPM or 10kRPM for everything else.
You wouldnt have to worry about anything getting inside the case as long you keep the case closed, if you be sure to add in the additional 200mm top side fan to it, there's a ton of airflow in that case, not many places for dust to settle with that much air running through it. Just make sure you don't do what I did and put teh fans in the wrong way -_- |

With the HAF X, it has dust filters to catch all but the most determined dust particles. I don't know how easy they come off (I've seen reviews calling them the best thing in the world, and some calling them stubborn and difficult to clean), but having them is better than not.
Like Avelict says, the SSD will show its performance boosting power as a boot drive. Imagine a world where your computer boots in 14 seconds into Windows, instead of 45. That's what an SSD will get you ![]() Accessing other non-essential files, e.g. games, etc, will be a little faster, but the majority of the time it'll be minimal. Only applications that do a high amount of reading or writing will see a noticeable performance boost. |
