Hi, DS forum members!

I will be going to college soon and am planning on buying a new laptop. I will use it for college work and games. I would like to run some FPSs (Crysis 2, Black Ops, Modern Warfare 2...), RPGs (Sims, Civ, Supreme Commander...), and MMOs (Rift atm). I will be fine running games at sub 1920x1080 resolution for better and more fluent performance. I was thinking around 1366x768 since I see a good amount of benchmarks and videos for laptops and their gpu's at that res. I am leaning more towards the xm17 because for only $150 more (atm at least) I can get 2gb more RAM and get the Nvidia GT 555M gpu, which I find to outperform the 540M significantly in benchmarks. I really can't spend a whole lot for a laptop and the LVL 2's are pretty much my max. The laptop I use now is around 2yrs old and when we got it it was priced at around $1200 ~ So I guess that would be my max expenditure on a new laptop.

So, post your thoughts and vote! Talk about what you think about the size-for-performance trade-off; what you think about Optimus and battery life; or whatever you think would help me make a good decision. I am open for discussion (I may not respond the fastest tho).

Thanks Again Guys! Big%20Smile

xm15 with optimus. 15" in my opinion is better in portability. Also, the 555M should be hitting the xm15 soon, as there's already a model listed on Clevo's site with the W150 and a 555M.

At the moment, XoticPC has reported via notebookforums that it may release in early May

The NP5175 from Sager has already released carrying the 555M, which is why it's up here. The NP5165 which is the 15.6" version is yet to be released, but has been listed at Clevo's site.

I believe you have it right ablahblah. The NP5165 will be the 15.6" laptop with GT 555M in it. That's what I got from the posts anyway, since the NP5175 is the 17.3" (current xm17) and the NP5160 (current xm15) is the current 15.6" laptop DS offers. That's what it looks like to me, but keep checking on that thread since I see you already asked Big%20Smile.

Well, there you have it, nbreview has confirmed that it may release early may! Wish you luck with it, I'm thinking about that model as well to replace my aging and retardified dell laptop.OS seems to have degraded somehow, failing to recognize LAN devices, start the Print Spool service even, and has lost control of its touchpad, nor can I find the OS reinstall disks LOL

The 555M looks promising, from what I've read, it's the highest possible graphics you can get on a laptop still enabling Optimus, next step is the 560M where it technically enters the high end graphics field.

We did update the xm17 which has the new 555 NVIDIA GPU. I believe the xm15 will also be updated within a week.

Thanks for informing me on the projected release of the new xm15 laptop Alex, really do appreciate it. I knew the xm17 had the 555M in it, but I just wanted to wait till the xm15 came out so I could compare prices and specs between it and the xm17. I can't wait! Excited

Yeah, sorry about that. Oops

No clue about pricing, except for Xotic and Mythlogic.

Eh, I like Xotic, better prices than Mythlogic for what I'm looking for.

Also, erm, Alex, just wondering, you guys have any clue where to get those "special 95% color gamut" matte screens Xotic and Mythlogic are promoting? I emailed and they acknowledged the existence of them, but never got back to me on it.

Just going to throw this out there. If you plan on actually taking the laptop to class or carrying it around ever, go with the 15. If you plan on just using it in your dorm room or w/e as a desktop replacement you could probably get away with a 17 inch if you wanted the larger screen.
