Hey guys I installed a new motherboard and cpu to my computer and everything runs fine but i keep getting a message saying Activate Windows, so i put in my old windows key and it says "The product key you entered didn't work. Check the product key. Error Code 0XC004f050." I was wondering what i could do/ how i could reactivate windows without having to buy a new code. Thank you.

Your product key is tied to the hardware and substantial changes, like a motherboard, usually means you have to do tell MS of the changes because they believe you have a new PC. Telling MS can mean just calling them or following an activation wizard. Depends what OS version you have. I would search Activation on your rig to get directions.
If you updated, not clean install, of Windows 10 from Windows 7/8, there is lots of confusion. Some have had to reinstall Win7/8, activate with older Win7/8 key, re-update to Windows 10 and then Windows 10 automatically assigns a product key. MS seems to have created a nightmare for some with the free Windows 10 update. I have no experience with it since my update and hope I don't have to figure it out. I like a challenge, though, but more hardware than software. Edited by bprat22 - 02 Jan 2016 at 4:13am |
