I configured a new rig. Please reference 379417 to take a look but I have some items that I was unsure about and some questions as well.
http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=379417 1. Motherboard w/ USB 3 capabilities. Is there one available thru DS for similar specs and $$$. 2. A case with accessible USB connectors on the front or top but not at the bottom on a mid-tower case. I do not need a full tower. A mid-tower case is sufficient and preferred. I love the look of the Cooler Master HAF 922 but would like something similar in a mid-tower size. I will not be making major expansions to the system. 3. Question - is the NVIDIA GTX 275 896 that I chose an SLI option as well or does it only work in single mode? Would it be better to downsize the video card but have 2 in SLI mode for the same $$? 4. I am not interested in overclocking or liquid cooling. 5. For this configuration would you recommend anything other than the factory heat sink and fan? 6. What is done when the disable and tweak all non-crucial services option is chosen? 7. What is the major difference in the I7 860 and the I7 920? I notice the socket set and the 920 has a lower GHz but how will any of that affect gameplay? The reason I ask is becasue I also looked at a similar config with the 860 CPU and saves me over 200 bucks even though 860 has higher GHz Thanks in advance for any support. |

1. you can just get a usb 3.0 card and add it to any mobo, otherwise real sata and usb 3.0 support should come end of this year or next year. have a look here
2. check out the sniper,a nd btw the 922 is a midtower, the 932 is the fulltower. 3. not sure by what you mean, all 275 cards can do sli, as long as the mobo can do it and the psu can handle more then one gpu. One card solution is alwasy best. 4. you need to oc, it makes the biggest difference in your cpu speed, its like the engine of the car. you don't need LC to oc. 5. like I said above you need to oc so I would go with v8 or Noctua. 6. don't bother with the os tweak its not worth it and they won't say what services are disabled anyways. 7. the difference is the platform, the x58 (920) can be upgraded with both cpu and gpu, in otherwords in a couple of years, instead of wishing you could get a new pc, you can upgrade teh cpu to 6 core for dirt cheap. the p55 (860) platform can't have the cpu be upgraded. the difference from 920 @ 2.66GHz and 860 @ 2.8Ghz will not be noticed in games, you need a bigger difference then that. if you oc the the 920 you can endup at 3.3GHz with stock cooler and 3.7GHz with the above mentioned coolers, this will make a huge difference in everything you do. the oc right now is free and under warranty, why not get a faster pc for free and if you want it even faster get the v8. as for your config, you want the 750w corsair psu and you would be much better off with a 5850 so get good performance from future dx11 games. what res you gonna be gaming at? |

Thanks for the reply and recommendations!!
I did not want to have to add a usb3 card. I have a usb2 card added to my system now and every time I format I have to update drivers for it because it says it was a usb2 but it defaults to usb1 until the driver is added and it is just an extra step I wanted to avoid this time. I was under the impression that with oc it needed loads of extra cooling. If I can get away with oc w/out lc or a high $$$ heat sink & fan system then that would be great. I will go with the 920 cpu per your recommendation - thanks! What is the 5850 you mentioned? I am currently running at 1280 x 1024. I am satisfied with that right now so going higher would only be an option if the rig would provide it. In other words I do not need to spec more to get better but if better is there then that is great. |

well for resolution of 1200 x 1000 a 275 is overkill.
you can get a lower card and be cool, like the 5770. the 5850 is one of ati's new cards that support dx11, just like the 5770. what resolution you can game at first and formost depends on your monitor, if your monitor can't support higher res then a gpu that can won't be able to do it. add the v8 for cooling and choose the free stage 1 oc and see if that is in your price, if it is then that is great, if its not then drop the v8 and go with stock cooling but keep the free oc. I have a usb card, if you let windows choose the drivers it will load drivers for usb 2.0 which is what mine does, I never load drivers for it. also you should not have to format, why do you format so much? format is the last option at all times. |
