Topic: New System Posted: 30 Sep 2007 at 4:07pm |
Turning my old system over to my daughter, been a great system with AMD 3500, 6800 GT video and Zalmen air cool. Time to step up and I'm confused about AMD vs Intel. Have always been under the impression that AMD was the best gaming chip set? I want to upgrade to Vista but am worried about all the problems I see people having with gaming systems. I'm one of those old dudes (46) who like to stay up all nite playing online FPS. So bottom line is I want a trouble free system to play most of the current games and games for the future. I will give you guys a call for more detailed info but would love to here from all the gamers at home.

AMD was superior to Intel back in the day but times have changed.
Intel completely wipes the floor with AMD now =x There is nothing wrong with Vista. It is not really that bad as the internet makes it to be =\ |

I think they both still have their strong points. AMD still makes alot of sense for a budget build, but Intel, as SkyR put it, wipes the floor with them at an E6750 or better. If your system build budget is ~$1000 or less you can squeeze more muscle from an AMD setup. It's a tighter race between $1000 and $1400 or so (in my opinion still favoring AMD strongly on the lower side of this range), and then past $1500, Intel just flat out beats AMD.

The battle between AMD and Intel is always raging.... It goes back and forth between the two.. Whos better at the moment changes all the time.. At this moment it will be Intel, but AMD has some new chips being released in hthe next 6 months so who knows.. Eventually Vista will be on every machine its just a matter of time... So buying Vista will atleast guarantee that updates will fix ongoing issues at some point

Vista is a resource hog and will run most things more slowly than XP.
All you get with Vista is some eye candy that you can easily duplicate with XP add-ons if you really want them. Eventually there will be some DX10 games to speak of, but at the moment, what's available isn't that great.
I have 3 XP machines and 1 Vista - Vista is about 2 service packs away from being on the level of XP in terms of overall reliability and compatibilty with hardware and software.
I say 2, because SP1 will just be a cumulative release of the hotfixes that are already out and some updated driver support.
Even with the current hotfixes installed, Vista is a crapshoot for networking, maintaining an internet connection after hibernating, and getting your old programs to run. I can probably reboot my XP machine 5(!) times in the time it takes my Vista machine to come back up.
XP's cutoff deadline was just extended by Microsoft - Retailers can now sell it until June 2008, system builders have until January 2009, entry level machines can get XP installed through 2010. MS will provide XP support through 2012, and extended support through 2017.
Nope, XP isn't going anywhere for awhile. Even MS posts instructions on how you can use your downgrade rights to get XP on a Vista-installed machine.
I'd recommend getting XP (in case you hadn't guessed), and waiting to see what Windows 7 has. People that say converting to Vista is inevitable and you might as well do it now forget that MS has stated that Windows 7 will be here around 2010 - that's just over 2 years away.

Keep in mind that Vista isn't "the future", though. MS wants a much shorter cycle between OS releases.

Thanks to those who replied, thanks to Kelly at DS we made some good strides. Real close to ordering but one last ? do I stick with stage 2 air cool or go the next step and do a stage 3 air twister boost? I will be going with the Quad Q6600. Just wondering if OC this chip is worth the risks.

not really a risk, DSO will make sure it is stable and there is a 3 year warranty. |

Stage 2 use the same heatsink/fan combo as Stage 3. The only difference is DS will overclock your system for you if you choose Stage 3 and it will be stable. If you think you can safely overclock your system, go with Stage 2 but the warranty won't cover the OC. The Quadcore certainly worth it because more and more apps are going to be able to use the extra cores. |
