    Posted: 18 Dec 2008 at 10:19am

I got my computer about a year and a half ago, and I have SLI'd 8800 Ultras.  SLI is a pain in the butt I have come to realize and I was thinking about getting a new vid card (or maybe 2 if I can deal with SLI again).

I have been advised to wait for the successor of the GTX 280, which will be out apparently next month some time.  Do you think these cards (a single one) will give me better performance than my SLI'd cards I use now?  I heard a single GTX 280 would give me similar performance to what I have now, and the newer one will undoubtedly be better.  I game in 1920x1200 and don't usually have problems but some games I can't completely crank the stuff up in at this resolution.  I also am wondering whether or not this would require me to upgrade my mobo, and if so, I probably won't make the change.

You don't need to upgrade your mobo for new cards. Just make sure your PSU is able to handle it.

Would upgrading my mobo make any difference in how the card is utilized or anything like that (like make it faster)?

I have a 1000W PSU, so I think I will be okay on that front.

you should get teh new 295 gtx when it comes out in jan, its perfect for you, one card and its made to run high res. if you have pci-e 2.0 then your mobo upgrade will do you nothing.

I can't wait to see benchmarks on that card.  I wonder if it will be better than my SLI setup at my resolution.  SLI has just been a headache with unsupported games, TDR's, etc.

meh, I was just reading on hardforums what people thought about it and there are some pretty knowledgeable people over there who said that it won't be any better than a 4870x2 and there were some links to benchmarks and stuff.  Hardocp also has a preview of the 295 gtx and it isn't really any better than the ATI.

If this turns out to be the case, can I use a 4870x2 on my 680i A1?  If so, will the performance be bottlenecked at all by using it on an nvidia board?
