I am ordering my first real gaming rig. Previously I have ordered machines from Dell but want to take the plunge to a machine more suited to gaming. I looked at Alienware and was disappointed in the value for money.
I'm not an expert but have put together the following config #417471
I want to avoid liquid cooling but still have dual GTX 480s. Is this a good case to provide air only cooling? Are there enough fans? I don't want it to sound like jet taking off though!
Any other advice to offer? Thanks in advance,
Tim

I think the majority of the guys who provide advice on configs would say get an intel SSD. they are also going to need the size and resolution of your monitor to advise on GPU's . You may want 7 pro if you want to play XP only games- It provides "VIRTUAL XP " kind of a backwords compatible enviorment for older programs, Also go for the free overclock- if you worried about damaging the CPU you can un do it when you get your rig. But like i said you may need to wait for some one to give advice on your GPU 's unless you have made your mind up.

Sorry, I should have included the monitor the first time. I plan to buy an LG W2486L which supports 1920x1080.
Will the overclocking add any significant heat that may cause an issue? Does it reduce the life expectancy at all?
Thanks
Tim

That's something people debate all time, I think as long as it isnt overclocked to much and has proper cooling it will last a long time. It will prob last long enough till you upgrade to a new chipset. As far as the monitor i think 2 480's may be overkill but i am not an expert on that. there are people in the forums who have better insight esp with nvidia cards all i have used is ATI. I think 2 would be overkill though , Iam getting same size monitor with resolution and am getting 5870 or 480 - prob overkill could use a 470 or 5850 most likely but I also plan to hook up to by tv once in a while

There is no difference between the extreme edition from the regular i7 930 except a hold in your pocket. A i7 930 at 3.7 preforms just as well as a extreme edition at 3.7. A gtx 480 should be enough to max out all of the games at your resolution except the badly programmed games such as Crysis and Metro 2033. Intel ssd's are sooooo much better than corsair ssd's according to the forums. The noise dampening material isn't really needed if you trap noise then you trap heat. This should be more than enough for your resolution. (you can add the 1250 watt power supply if you plan on going sli later on)

Thanks for the suggestions.
I don't want a monitor bigger than 24 inches. Is there a better 24 inch monitor that you would recommend for a reasonable price? From my research, it seems that to jump to a higher resolution, the price takes a big jump and I wasn't sure that it was worth it.

for a monitor you might want to check out the Acer G245Hbmid. It's been getting good reviews, and one of the videophiles at Hardforums even rated it better than a $300 Samsung. I have one in transit as we speak, should be here next week :D
