Hello. I'm planning a new rig. Been shopping, comparing, gathering as much info as I can before ordering. I really like what I've found here so far. Been lurking here for a while. I'm looking towards a purchase in the next couple of months, primarily because Battlefield 3 is due out before the end of the year.(Although I'm not holding my breath) I doubt my current comp will run it. My goal is to be bleeding edge ENOUGH so as to do as well as I have with my current rig. I have a Dell 8300 series. Its nearly 6 years old. All I've had to upgrade in that time is some additional RAM and GPU (now a 7800GS). It still runs 2142, FFOW, COD4, BF2 on med to high settings. So on to my many questions.
Processors. 9450 to 9650. The only difference is clock speed? So overclocking a 9450 is same as non-OC 9650?
My understanding is that the FSB is the issue with overclocking and choosing memory, etc. If the MB only supports 1333, getting memory with 1600 is useless as the MB becomes a bottleneck. Just asking so as to match the MB, memory and processor's speeds. If any of the three is slower, bottlenecks occur?
Two hard drives set up with their own OS = two computers. One for family, one for gaming toy for me that they can't corrupt with inadvertant or intentional well-meaning downloads?
Bigfoot Killer network adapter card. Noone seems to select this. I've heard great HYPE about them. Is it everyone's opinion that it is hype? Are they worth it?
Windows OS tweak. What's involved? What "unnecessary" things won't work afterwards?
Why does everybody here buy computers without monitors, speakers, keyboards and mouses? Makes the price look better?
What do I need to share my cable internet with my current comp?
Thanks to everyone in advance.

The QX9650 has an unlocked multiplier so enthusiasts can take the chip to its limits. But other than that and the price, both are the same.

So is the bigfoot just too expensive (which it is) or too expensive for what it does? How much difference does it make gaming? Also are the OS tweaks they offer worth the money. What's it do exactly? |

The bigfoot is way too expensive for what it does. You'll get double digit ping in America no matter what and if you want single digit ping in gaming, move to Korea.
If you aren't computer savvy, the os tweaks are probably worth the money. I don't have an exact list of what it includes, you can call them and ask. |

Bigfoot is too expensive period. Every review I have read puts it in the "if I had unlimited money and space would it be cool, sure" category.
In essence it offloads a trivial amount of system processing to the network card. It is for people spending loads of cash on the ultimate bleeding edge machine looking to get that one last gasp of power out of their system. There are far better dollar to performance ratio items you can spend on before going with a bigfoot nic |

DS charges 25 bucks for their OS tweeking services. If youre getting Vista, id recommend the program by stardock called tweekvista, it basically can do the same service but in one mouse click, it also does other bonus things. And its 19.95, not a huge savings over DS tweeking, but a savings non the less. Link below. |

not 100% true, with only 2 computers you can connect one to the internet and tunnel to the 2nd, good way to avoid paying for a router or for 2 internet connections.

Vista allows easy internet connection sharing when you first start it up it asks if you want to set up internet connection sharing, all you need is 2 network ports and a second network cable. This has the drawback of requiring the master computer that is connected to the cable or dsl modem to be on in order for the slaved PC to have internet. The 780i and 790i motherboards both have the two needed network ports. Windows will take care of the rest. Dave Edited by Kliebor2 - 03 Jul 2008 at 5:58am |
