Look under Computer Related > Software discussion > "Must Have Software" for some suggestions on maintenance software. Many of the suggestions are still around, and regularly updated. I rely on Windows Security to protect my system after many years of third party suites like McAfee, Norton and others. The greatest benefit having Win take care of this is there is never a conflict with the OS. I've never had a problem.

I'd like to recommend you change your primary drive to one of the Samsung 980s. You'll benefit greatly having that speed at your command when booting and running apps. Games don't benefit that much from a really fast SSD, but everything you do in Windows will.

For me there’s not much to do after plugging in my new DS rig.     I hookup and sign in to my internet provider, Comcast, download Steam, download a game or two and game away. Good way to make sure all is well. After that a graphics card update is probably in order.   Games that need the latest update will usually let you know.

I don’t even use a separate virus protection program anymore after years of McCafe, Norton, etc.   Windows protection has come a long way.

KISS, keep it simple stupid, is a long standing tradition for me.

Have fun.

I just plugged my rig in, and turn it on. Installed Steam and a few of my fav games and started playing. That is the plan for when I get my new PC from Digital Storm.

I concur with  PcKiller for the quickest start.

I do like to play with various operating systems so I tend to add a bit more.

01. I install Windows 11 Pro on the SSD along with all of the gaming platforms and games (Steam, GOG, Epic, EA, etc.)
02. I install the Linux Distro, Debian 12 (Bookworm) on one of the hard drives to serve as my daily driver.
03. On all of my OSes, I install an antivirus, a VPN, and a Password Vault.
04. Additionally, I install the Firefox browser and Thunderbird email client.
05. Where ever possible and practical, I select and install open source software such as LibreOffice and GIMP.
