That is why I'm asking.

How do I know if I need a 32bit or 64bit OS? Can I stick with XP either way?

I'm shopping for a laptop if that is a factor.

Also, could I get some information on the battery life in your laptops?

64bit is a better OS, but you should go with what you like.

I can't help you on battery life cause I don't have one of their laptops.

bit is a digital unit if you will,

advantages of a 64bit is it can see and use more ram then 32bit

64 bit calculates twice as fast as a 32 bit in some tasks.

disadvantages is that the 64 bit OS does not support any 16 bit apps. (old stuff)

I am interested in knowing if XP OS are available in 64bit. Does DS not offer them or are they unavailable?

no XP 64 bit is why 64bit has a bad name, it was horrible, the reason we XP users like vista 64bit cause it has support for hardware and such, where XP 64 bit did not.

Okay,

I now understand the benefit of 64bit vs 32bit (64bit will do it's thing twice as fast).
It's something I might be interested in buying, however in my search for a new computer I've read up on Vista.

Not a lot of good news out there.

I use, and like, XP. However I've used a Vista computer every now and then and it didn't seem so bad.

Is Vista as craptastic as it's purported to be? and is an XP going to be better than any speed of Vista?

Thanks a lot guys, I'm the type that does thorough research before making a big purchase and heard about this company because people said it had a helpful forum and this does not disappoint.

I realize from looking at the other posts on this forum that I'm pretty "101"

Florida, Vista has no issues with modern hardware like you will be getting from DSO. With a few tweaks you can ease the most annoying proclivities of Vista and have a great operating system that is very nice for everything including gaming.

In some cases XP will squeeze an extra 2 or 3 FPS out of some hardware configurations in some games but that is not a guarantee and is by no means universal. More modern games written with Vista in mind and using more up to date shader models and modern hardware capabilities have mostly erased that difference.
