I am thinking of upgrading my heatsink to the Noctua that is so heavily recommended here. I see that it can be configured several ways. I am using the CM Sniper case. So I have intake on the front, intake on the side, and exhaust on the top currently. I have the asetek LCLC cooling my CPU right now, with the radiator mounted exhausting air from the case. My thoughts are this: I figure with the big 240MM fans bringing air in from the front and side, I could setup the Noctua to pull air from the bottom/exhaust at the top and that should work. Or would you recommend pulling from the front/exhausting back? If that would be preferred would I need to leave a 120MM exhaust fan on the case as well?

unless ur case is a vertically cooled cased like the ft02 in my sig. Cool air being pulled from the front of the case out the back is best in my opinion.

noctua will pull air form the case, you can't set it up any other way.
front and side should push in, top and rear should exhuast. no matter how a case is setup, heat rises, so top fans should always suck air up and out, the rear should always be sucking air out also. |

@DST, I think you might have misunderstood my question. I realize that top and back will always be exhausting, which is how it is setup now. However, what I am asking is, should I orient the noctua to exhaust back or up? I suppose it really doesn't matter much. However, the real question is, should I keep the 120MM exhaust on the back of the case, when the noctua would be pointing right at it. It would end up being like 3 120mm fans in a chain.

I see, its push pull right, heat rises so set it to shoot it up toward the top fan that is sucking air out.
however are you sure you can decide which way it goes? I thought they went in one way. Edited by DST4ME - 12 Aug 2011 at 4:51pm |

Yeah, I was reading up on the installation instructions on their website. You can choose how you put in the mounting brackets so that it will point horizontal or vertical. My though was vertical made more sense as well, since heat naturally rises anyway.

the only problem is you really have no airflow coming from the bottom of the case. |

You don't need it to directly come from the bottom, I would be surprised if that made even a 1c difference in that case.
He has the option of adding fans to the bottom, its nice to have but not a necessity at all with these cases/fans they have, with the front and side blowing air in, and top and rear sucking air out, the airflow is so high already that fans on the bottom blowing will not make much of a difference.
