 Hi,

I'm a graphic/digital artist. I need some help configuring a non gaming PC. The applications I use are for 3d modeling (Various apps) , high end environment creation (VUE), Photoshop, Painter. All of these apps are very graphic and memory intensive, and a well as needing a lot CPU power to render large scale images in a reasonable amount of time.

What I know I want is the following :

Intel 7i Quad Core

64 bit OS (Vista Ultimate)

12 gb memory

1gb graphic card

What I don't know about and could use some advice on is :

QUIET! - No noise - no "hissing" - no "humming" (My current PC's fans and other "stuff" sound like I'm standing on a runway - this new pc has to be silent)

1 -  Power Supply - I assume since I want a high end graphics card, I want a higher power supply?? - but how much 1000W, 1200W

2 - Cooling - Do I need liquid cooling since I'm concerned about noise? Also, if it's liquid cooling, does that require maintenance? Is it cooling for the CPU and the graphics card? Do I need add'l fans?

3 - Dual hard drives - I understand the benefits for dual drives in gaming, will it do anything for the above requirements? I currently have an external 500gb drive, which will be used on the new machine, as well.

4 - RAID - 0 or 1 - If I get two hard drives, do I have to have RAID set, or can I just use the two drives independently?

5 - Anything I'm not aware of, but probably should consider in this configuration?

Any info or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks very much for your time.

John

No PC will be silent. PSU noise and case fan noise are inevitable, but for a more quiet system you could go with LC.

1. Unless you plan to do with a dual video card setup a 750 wt PSU will do just fine

2. Lcing does not require maintenance. It requires you to to fill the reservoir whenever your levels get low.

3. Dual HDD's will not increase your performance, it will just allow for more storage space.

4. You do not need a raid config to have more then one HDD.

5. (other thoughts)

-Windows Home Premium is the same thing as Ultimate minus a few things that you would probably never use anyway.

-Whats your price range so we can help you config a rig.

Thank you very much for this configuration -

I should mention one thing, some of the apps I use (suggest) and work better with Nvida cards vs. ATI, but I assume I can just select the 1gb Nvida instead of the ATI

the 920 and 940 dont' support 1600MHz ram only upto 1333MHz

not sure if you need more then 6GB but I suggest you go with 6GB and ask them to be 3 x 2GB sticks.

if you see you need more ram just another 6GB which is really easy.

here you go Ticket# 221228 --- Price: $2906 (To see this build click here)

DST with all due respect i would love to see were your getting that info from. cause iv read about 10 places that say different. Im pretty sure that it can handle those speeds if you OC your CPU. but someone correct me if im wrong.

you can run RAM speeds over 1066MHz with an i920. If you want to OC your i7 1600MHz RAM comes highly recommended. The reason being that 200 MHz Bclk is realistically achievable, and that sits nicely with the 4x memory multiplier to give a non DDR RAM freq of 800MHz, which is DDR3-1600MHz. With that set you can use the CPU multi to set your core speed in 200MHz jumps.

Thanks again for the info....

Just so I'm  sure here, I do want 12GB of memory - there is no way I want to take a chance of getting memory errors on this machine. 3D modeling and environment apps are total memory hogs.

Thanks

Intel themselves have it. the 965 is the only chip that has the ability to override the integrated memory controller frequency, the 940 and 920 don't, officially Intel actually supports only 1066MHz.

you can OC the Bclock and achieve running 1600MHz also lets keep in mind that the 920 and 940 have 2 memory dividers six and eight.

in short you won't notice the difference between 1333 and 1600MHz and its not worth the money to go push the system to its limits like that, it will only cause problems and not worth the money.

notice the number "1" note is only for the 965.

IMO if one wants to bleed their system to that extent then one should get a 965.

if you want 12 go ahead but I think its overkill, you have to remember this 12GB systems are a monthy old, if you came here 3 month ago, you would have wanted 8GB cause 12 was not there.

now the difference between 6GB and 8GB is nothing you would notice.
