Topic: non-gaming system config help Posted: 28 Feb 2010 at 12:25am |
Can you guys recommend a system for me? My main usage is music production, software dev, and home video editing. I'm concerned about noise (want a quiet system) and boot up/program startup speed (implies an SSD?). I'm using a 30" dell 3007 @ 2560x1600 and don't need to do any serious performance gaming but would like to add another monitor sometime. So, my partial spec looks like this:
cpu: i7920 or i7860 ram: 12Gb or 8Gb os: win 7 64bit os drive: SSD data drives: 2x 1 Tb in RAID 1 (data protection) music recording drive: 1Tb optical: cd/dvd read write video: ati 5770? Does the above sound reasonable for my needs? If so, what should I do to make it as quiet as possible (slight noise is tolerable, but want it quiet enuf to record vocals with the computer in the same room). Oh yeah... my budget maxes around $3500... Thanks in advance! Maxage Edited by maxage - 28 Feb 2010 at 11:45am |

well noise is gonna be an issue, if you want a quiet pc, you gonna want to LC the cpu and gpu and ask them to use quite fans.
but ya your setup sounds about right. |

Thanks DST4ME. I'd like to avoid LC and can live a little noise, just want to minimize it. The Noise Reduction package sounds good and so does the quiet fans. I'm not sure which fans are the quietest though. I suppose I should call the DS folks. |

the quite one you have to special order DS does not carry them, I think air is a great choice, noise reduction will trap heat also, so I'm not so sure it a great idea, I normally advise against it.

Looks like a pretty good config though I'd like a bit more RAM and RAID.
Plus, I'll ask around about the Noise package to see what others think as well. Thanks for your help! |

Well I was gonna go with 12GB but the option was not there for the section I was at, so waht you need to do is give that ticket number and tell them that you want that system with 12GB, and the same with raid, you need to also ask them that you want HDD2 to be 2 x 1TB in raid, again if was not an option in the section I was at.
once you get those prices, come back and let me see if the section that has the choices will give you better prices or the ones quoted are better. Sarah is amazing, you should talk to here: Sarah at 1-866-817-8676 Extension: 115 and she will set you up Edited by DST4ME - 05 Mar 2010 at 1:39pm |

I am sure we can work out a situation where if you are in need of 16GB we can arrange a way to make that happen for you.
As for the 2x1TB on the Special Deal, what I normally do is just put one in Drive 1 and Drive 2 and select the raid option. We usually get the hint and I usually follow it up on the order with notes to create a raid with the drives. Either way, send me an e-mail with what you are looking for and I will see what I can work out for you. |

Sarah about the raid and settings it, just to be clear, notice he wants ssd for HDD1 but for HDD2 he wants the raid (2 x 1TB)and then for HDD3 he wants 1 x 1TB.

Ah, then yes, we would need to manually add it in. Either way, he can send me an e-mail and I can help him out of course.

Just to update the thread in case others are interested in this kind of build...
Sarah has been very helpful via email and has recommended build # 389127. We're just following up on some questions I had about ssd TRIM support and case noise (I want ssd TRIM support with win 7 and would like the quietest, most conservative case that can handle 4 drives). Kudos to y'all and DS (Sarah) for helping me figure out all these options! Cheers, Maxage |

for your needs a 5870 is overkill, all you need is a 5770, change your psu to corsair.
both corsair and ocz support trim but ocz does not support ahci mode. Edited by DST4ME - 03 Mar 2010 at 2:09am |

Ok... I really close to figuring this out with everyone's help. Sarah found out which SSD's support TRIM...
Quote: SSDSA2MH160G2C1 - Supported (Needs firmware update!) CMFSSD-256GBD1 - Not Supported CMFSSD-256GBG2D - Supported (Needs firmware update!) CMFSSD-128GBG2D - Supported (Possibly needs firmware update) CMFSSD-128D1 - Future End Quote She confirmed DS will do the firmware updates. I'm going to go with the Intel drive (first in list). So, my goal is: HD1: 160G Intel SSD w/TRIM HD2: 2x1Tb HDD in RAID 1 HD3: 1x1Tb HDD I just want to make sure there's no issue with this setup and having TRIM work with the SSD mixed with RAID on 2 of the other the other drives. I've heard there might be issues with TRIM not working if you also have RAID in use, though that was specific to an ASUS P6TD mobo. I'm looking at the EVGA X58 LE Edition. Any insights? I'm a little lost on how TRIM, AHCI and RAID all interact. Thanks, Maxage |

I see DST has got you pretty well set up, just wanted to throw in my 2 cents and agree that you definitely want to go with the extra ram for video editing. You will need it.
