I need your advice in choosing a chassis & I don't have a clue as to what makes one chassis better than another.
Please note that I will most likely get my new PC from DS configured with an i7-920 CPU; Stage 1 overclocking & air cooling (Stage 2 Noctua NH-U12P High performance Cooler).

Very simply:
1. Don't buy a Mid Tower
They're a compromise, bottom line.
2. Read Reviews
Google the cases DS offers, and read as many reviews on them as you can (really should do this for ALL the components of any new system you're considering). Note the reviews likes and dislikes about the product and compare them to your own concerns.
3. Look at Pics!
Don't buy an ugly case. 'Nuff said.

I agree with Psimon however, aesthetics is typically what draws you in first. So, number one, DO NOT BUY AN UGLY CASE!

1. I'm definitely not getting a mid-size tower. I have one already with my Dell desktop & it makes repairs & upgrades quite difficult. I had to get the RAM upgraded & Dell sent an experienced technician to my home. I had never opened the case before & everything looked very cramped. The technician had one hell of a difficult time working inside that cramped mid-tower. I plan on learning how to do my own upgrades on the new DS PC that I'm ordering early next month so I want as large a chassis as possible.
2. What websites do you trust to give an honest & straightforward review?
3. I'm not interested in the aesthetics of the PC so I don't mind if it's ugly. I'm more concerned with picking a chassis that will allow for upgrades & allow the heat generated by the components to vent out properly.

Hm, well, it almost seems as if there's more cases out there than reviewers.
I take all of them with a grain of salt, but the ones I'd probably believe the most would be HardOP, Tom's Hardware (I'd prowl their forums and search with the keywords of the case's manufacturer and model), AnAndTech, www.motherboards.org, www.hardwaresecrets.com . . . there's a whole bunch of others that'll come up, some overclocker club sites I'll sometimes read. A lot of times I'll just bring up newegg and read their buyer's reviews, although you really can't put weight on the opinions there, just see if the majority liked the item, or hated it.
I avoid cnet and PC World, personally, they put out a lot of manure along with the good stuff.
Just have to make your own judgement in the end. If the reviewer ladles on the hyperbole and doesn't even find one or two items to nitpick, be suspicous. On the other hand, if the reviewer is nitpicky but still grudgingly admits he loves the product, there you go. How knowledgable he is, is another matter.
I didn't read one review that disliked the HAF 932. Some nitpicks, sure, but all thumbs up.

I thank you very much for helping me out with your terrific answer, Psimon. I'm definitely going to check out those websites that you've mentioned. One of my friends in the PS3 gaming clan that I belong to builds his own PCs & he recommended the Cooler Master cases so I'll most likely go with a HAF. But I'll still do my own research too.

As a midtower, haf 922 is an exception, because it is huge. You can pretty much fit inside it everything that you'd want for the other cases. It's a nice case with great airflow. Compared to the other three, personally it fails a little bit in look.

Cooler Master has put out some great cases in the past 5-6 years. I couldn't speak as to the Hailstorm as I didn't look at it.
Another place to look for reviews is Youtube. Not that they're necessarily good reviews, but you can get a good look at the product from many angles, see it's features demonstrated, etc.
Oh, and as far as "ugly", well, that's like art appreciation, subjective. I find the HAF932 "beautiful" due to its functionality and sturdiness. It's kindof a brute, though, heh, making few concessions to aesthetics. Just sitting there doing it's job. Edited by Psimon - 17 Oct 2009 at 8:49am |
