I'm planning on buying a gaming PC from DS early next month & I'm trying to keep the total price between $2,500 - $3,000. Please note that I'm a noob & the last time that I had a PC that was capable of playing 3D games was all the way back in 2001.
I'm seeing that it costs an extra $394 to get the i7-950 CPU (3.06 GHz) over the standard i7-920 (2.66 GHz).
1) Would it make more sense to just get the i7-920 & pay DS the extra $45 to perform a Stage 1 CPU overclock rather than pay an extra $394 for the i7?
2) I'm concerned about some of the downsides of overclocking such as the extra heat & shorter life of the CPU. I want to keep this new PC for at least 5 years. I am willing to pay the extra $249 for a 5-year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty. If my CPU dies within that 5-year period - will DS cover 100% of the cost to replace ethe CPU?
3) If I do go with a Stage 1 CPU overclock - what cooling options do you recommend?
(Please note that this PC must run as quietly as possible because it will be in my bedroom).

do the 920, stage 1 overclock Noctua air cooler, quite.
The stage one overclock will shorten the life of the chip, but it will still last 12-15 years.
the graphics cards and power supply will make more noise that the air cooler on the chip.

1. what justin said
2. yes DS will replace parts for 5 year with the 5 year warranty, IMO its a good idea to get the 5 year warranty. 3. 90% of your noise will come from your gpu's fans, psus over 1000w can be loud also, if you want quiet then LC the cpu/gpu and watch what psu you get. |

a) 1000W DS Certified - Silent Edition
b) 1000W Corsair HX - Silent Edition
I don't think my budget will allow for LC the CPU/GPU since the least expensive Stage 3 LC is $599. My budget for the entire PC is only $2,500 -$3,000. Edited by B5GkarNarn - 14 Oct 2009 at 9:10pm |

Another vote for corsair
if you want quite then LC is what you need, the gpus fans will be loud under load, if the budget does not allow it, then that is fine, just have to live with the noise, but that is only when the gpus are under load. |

I don't mind if the PC is a little noisy when the GPU is under load. I'm more concerned with the noise level of the PC when it is on overnight & running antivirus/antispyware scans, disk defragmentation, and scandisk (checkdisk). Due to the fact that my wife & I sleep in the same room where the PC is located - it is very important that the PC run the aforementioned tasks with as little noise as possible.
What do I need to know to configure the new PC to run the abovementioned tasks as quietly as possible?

Again, the most noise you'll get is from the GPU's fans. None of the programs you listed need the GPU much, you can run them with the monitor off and view results in the morning. The only component they might stress is the CPU.
If the Noctua's fan keeps you awake then you're a very, very light sleeper. Or the Wife is.
one other element to consider is the system's lighting, is it going to disturb either of you? Edited by Psimon - 15 Oct 2009 at 3:53pm |

Ok lets see, your pc should not be loud over night, your gpus are not gonna be under load so it should be fairly quite.
btw you don't need to run defrag, scandisk, chkdsk and etc running every night. scan disk and chkdsk should be ran only when there are problems, defrag should be done once every 3 to 6 month, also when you get the veloci or ssd your scan time and etc will be much faster. |

I run Disk Cleanup every month too but have been a bit lax about running Scandisk (Checkdisk).
However, I do run the antivirus/antispyware scan (Zone Alarm) on the "Deep Inspection" setting every week & that really takes a very long time so I run it overnight.

You bring up a very good point regarding the system's lighting. I'm not planning on getting any special lighting. What kind of lighting does the system have while it's running?

Depends on the chassis. The HAF 932 front 230mm fan has a red LED.
On the plus side, the 230mm fans - larger than the usual 140's - have lower RPM and are thus quieter while moving copious amounts of air.
Honestly, many of the rigs on this site - DS - are for enthusiasts and hobbyists. Most have lighting, interior or UV reactive, because we like our bling. You could possibly ask DS about replacing the front fan with a non-LED model, or order one yourself from Cooler Master or other retailers.
That's assuming it'd bother you two. I can't say how many lumens they put out. Wouldn't keep me awake, though.

There are programs for Nvidia cards, ATI comes with it standard..MSI has one for all cards, it is the best one out there by far... But honestly why run them at night?? th 12 seconds it takes to boot a PC seems like a better route to me, but I am a very light sleeper. lol

Stock fans for haf 932 are sufficient for cooling, and other then maybe a little noise at startup, very quiet. If you don't want led lights, just ask ds not to plug in the led power connectors or unplug them; takes only seconds. Haf 932 fan leds and case leds have separate power connectors, so very simple to not use.
