I'm planning on buying a desktop PC from DS within the next few weeks.
How do I choose a motherboard from these options:
1) Asus:
a) Rampage II Extreme 2) EVGA: a) X58 Micro Edition SLI b) X58 LE Edition SLI c) X58 3X SLI d) X58 Classified 3X SLI |

all depends on how many gpus you gonna use and if you have any other cards like sounds cards and etc.
IMO your best options are evga, but forget about micro, its does not have room to grow. |

I have to say that the Micro is an excellent board for the money.. you can run dual 295's at full 16x speed, which is better than some of the other boards, overclocks very well, and the VRM's run pretty cool. I am very happy with the one I just built.

but it has only those 2 slot, you can't use any other cards, if you want a sound card, you are sh*t out of luck, if you need a wireless card, you are sh*t out of luck, etc., etc.

Yes, you are correct, it kicks but for a low priced, small form factor board that can do quad sli at full speed, but it does lack the extra Pci e slots for sound cards, and other like components.

actually I noticed a lot of more advanced BIOS options were missing compared to the classified boards, but still did 4.4Ghz like a dream, compact power! love to do one in a tiny LAN box but must focus on more important things..

Also, are some motherboards better equipped than others to handle the effects of Stage 1 overclocking of the CPU? What other cards (besides video & sound cards) go on a motherboard? |

for you use I would go with the x58 3x sli, that way you have room for 2 cards and one other card.
you don't have to worry about the effect of ocing with the ranges you see here and most of the effect of an oc is on the cpu anyways. many cards can go on the pci slot, wireless card, tv card, lan card, usb card, etc,. |
