First off, I just got of the phone with Sara, and she was WONDERFUL!! I'm a first time builder and I'm so pumped about my unit. I'm just wondering if I, being a newbie, would be able to OC my i920 and my gtx260 or should I just let DS do it. I would rather let DS do it, but I need to be down in my price about 67 dollars. I know its just 67 dollar, but ever since I started doing research on computers, my price has gone up and up and up and up. I think I'm at the breaking point with my wife that just even 67 dollars would blow up in my face. What to do. If I did it, would it void any warranty? Thanks for the help. Maybe I can just sneak it out and deal with the wife later.

Okay on the OC. But as for the mobo, I'm on a tight budget, can't go up any higher right now. |

Here's a suggestion, delete the second hard drive for now, they are relatively easy to install yourself and that will save $61 right there.
Next, remove the OC on the GPU, there are members of this forum that can help you with overclocking your GPU. That will save $45.

What is your current budget?
You could also remove the case lighting, saving yourself a few more bucks. With the savings from the removal of the HD, GPU OC and case lighting, you may be able to upgrade to the EVGA board.

Here is what my new setup looks like now. I will wait and add another HD this year. Upgraded the mobo and took off the GPU OC. This is perfect for me!! Okay, another suggestion.
Remove the Flight Simulator game and upgrade your Power Supply to 1000 watts. it's only $47 more but will allow you to do most any upgrade you can imagine for the next few years without having to upgrade the Power Supply.

The XFX and EVGA board are the same price but it's a better idea to go with EVGA.

The OC fee is cheap! You can get a 920 to OC as high as a stock 965 even on air V8 and save $1,000.

You can save $10 by not getting the Internal Lighting option.
Hey, looks like every little bit helps, and, you'll still get the bottom fan illuminated red.
I'd follow everyone's advice re; 1000W PSU, EVGA mobo, and let DS oc the CPU.

I dropped the FSX (Its killing me) but I found it at amazon for 36 bucks with free shipping, so I'm not so bummed about it. I would've liked DS to install and update it and all that good stuff, but I'm sure if I have questions, they will help. I also dropped the wireless link, I figure I can get that later on in the next month and put that in myself no problem. After doing that, I picked up the 1000w PSU and evga. |

Hey Harley, you got anything on how to OC a gtx260 GPU. I've been looking and haven't really found something good to understand for a newbie.

just use my quick walk thru for rivatuner, once you understand that you will understand precision also
they are both the same but riva is better, in the past precision has had bugs with windows that riva does not suffer from. Edited by DST4ME - 19 Mar 2009 at 1:37pm |

I personally suggest EVGA Precision, its alot easier to work with, especially if you have not done overclocking before in my opinion.
JB it was a pleasure speaking with you on the phone the other day, and it looks like your just making a few final tweaks to your configuration and it looks like it will be about ready. Don't forget, you are going to get that promotional discount, so that will put you closer to your budget. Dropping the lighting is a good idea on saving 10 bucks. And if you have anymore questions, or are ready to purchase, you have my extension and im more then happy to help out. |

You rock. I know that the check is on the way to the bank for the purchase. How about I take the lighting off and you throw in the HAF Sara, I would take the lighting off and the OC for the I7, but I really want to OC the I7 because I have read it is great for OC'ing. As much as I would like to get the HAF, I just see the OC for the I7 a better deal because I have never OC'ed a computer and don't feel very comfortable doing it myself. What would you do as a newb? Its just been from my personal experience DST, when I first used RivaTuner, to me it was intimidating, I found Precision to be alot more straight forward, and easy to navigate.
JB, when you give me a call, I will see what I can do for you. I obviously can't give you the HAF, but let me see what I can do. |
