Nvidia's dual GT200 55nm comes in January
We've heard that there is a big possibility that Nvidia's dual GT200 55nm card that we mentioned before might slip to Q1 2009 and launch in January. The card was originally planned for December, but it looks like Nvidia might not make it. Whenever such a card comes out, it will take R700's, Radeon HD 4870 X2’s performance crown, something that Nvidia needs to operate under its parameters. The new card is likely to end up faster than the fastest ATI, and Nvidia will also bet on its better SLI optimization, all in order to return the performance crown that it needs back so badly. Nvidia has simply not given up this year and there might be a driver that could change the odds in Nvidia’s advantage, coming very soon. |

This one is going to be better than the 280? I have no idea what 55nm means...

this is the dual core gpu, like the ati 4870x2, this will be nvidia's version. very powerfull card.

I am far more interested in the driver help possibly coming soon, anything that will tweak out some more performance out of my cards is cool.

I doubt itll be more expensive than current 4870x2, although it will probably end up faster, which will make ATI lower the price on 4870x2, so youre looking at about the same price.
Gotta stay competitive unless their card compeletely demolishes 4870x2.

It's going to use 260 GPU's. So in theory it'll be the 260 GX2.
It's hard to believe it'll perform better than the 4870 X2. It also remains to be seen if they'll just be slapping to PCB's together like with the 9800GX2 or if it'll actually be to cores on one board. |

Here is how I see it. It will beat out the 4870x2's until ATI decides to release drivers to make the memory shared. Then the 4870x2's will take the lead again.

Yeah I like how ATI has decided to allow the X2 to get faster if they choose. It's already known that 4870 X2's are sold at clock speeds far below what they are capable of.

It will easily catch it if not beat it, just the driver support alone will do it.
but regardless, nvidia has always been the top dog, it will go back by end of 2009 to nvidia first ATI second, but it will it keep going back and forth, which is better is a waste of time and very temporary. |

nvidia only started being the top dog with their 8800 series. simple fact.
9800 > geforce 5 x850 > geforce 6 x1900 > geforce 7 hd2900 < geforce 8 hd3800 < geforce 9 hd4800 > gtx 200 |

I don't prefer nVidia or ATI. Whatever is fastest determines which I'll buy.
Right now ATI is a solid #1. The simple fact that 2 HD 4830's (a $140 card) can beat a 280 shows that. I look forward to what nVidia brings to the table next year. Competition is only good for the consumers. |

I'm sorry but 2 cards beating one, only shows how strong the one card is, that it takes 2 other cards to handle it

I don't think you understand. It shows how well made the new Radeon's and Crossfire works.
You can have 2 4830's for $280, which offers greater performance than the $450 280. That blows my mind. |

That comparison is outdated, it doesn't even show 4870 X2's which have been out for a while. Also new drivers have improved performance a lot.

that shows the 280 have higher performance also, the only time the 4830 comes close is in crossfire and higher resolutions, and we all know higher resolution right now is better with 2 cards.
If you want to look at that way, then you can get xf 4830 and beat a 4870x2 in certrain games in certain resoutions and that does not reflect the new drivers for nvidia either. But those cards can't do crap when it comes to folding Edited by DST4ME - 20 Nov 2008 at 2:53pm |

The whole point was to show that for half the price you can have performance that rivals the 280.
The XF 4830's cannot beat a 4870 X2... A majority of people who play games have a widescreen monitor and play at "higher resolutions". Most people don't buy fast GPU's for folding. |

no most people don't by GPU for folding but if we are taking power then folding shows, nvidia does it in double the job with half the power.
your chart is only for 3 games, only 2 of which beat it, players play more then just 2 games. in lower resolution 4830s will kill a 4870 Nvidia is dropping prices soon. If anybody wants to base their judgment on how good ATI is based on a couple of month, they can go ahead, my judgment tells me to not to come to conclusions based on something that changes every few month. the prices will change and the 4830s will not have the price advantage soon, nvidia comes out with new cards in a month or so. but so far nvidia has had the crown for the longest time, starting now and going back. so whoopee, ATI finally came out with a couple of good cards, and is on top for a couple of month. so what, its all temporary |

I understand you like nVidia so I'm not going to argue the finer points anymore.
You do know that ATI was the performance king for many years until 06. The reason ATI has been doing poorly lately is due to AMD buying them up and a lot of restructuring going on. I really look forward to seeing how AMD's CPU know-how will benifit their GPU's. |

Actually I don't have a preference, I used to be an ATI customer till AMD took them over, and they started having problems.
AT the same time till ATI clearly gets on top for a long time as Nvidia has for the alt-east the past year, I'm not going to say ATI is better, cause its temporary. to be honest with you, not anticipating what a 4870x2 can do was a mistake Nvidia made, and I don't see them making another one like it. when it comes to folding, I like Nvidia but only because it puts out double the work while using half the energy ATI would use to produce half the results Nvidia does. |

Correct, but competing companies will always leapfrog each other, it's what drives the industry. It's virtually impossible for one company to constantly beat the other consistently.

Agreed 100%, which is why I keep saying all of this "who is better now" is pointless cause its temporary |

Yeah nvidia wins at folding because of Cuda. Wait until Folding @home includes ati's Stream SDK. With ati's 800+ stream processors. Ati will kick nvidias butt. But until then Nvidia is the champ.
