Hey Forum,

I've been hearing loads of stuff on the forums about these 2 cards running super hot. Would a SLI setup work with the Noctua NH-D14? A setup with either 2 470's or 2 480's. If not would the frostchill upgrade work? It's only for the CPU but what if there were also Zalman fans??

Thanks in advance

The NH-D14 covers some of the Ram up but from what i have seen does not in anyway obstruct or preclude one from going SLI at all.  Page 2 shows it mounted on a mobo, as long as you dont have crazy tall ram your good to.

and pic here mounted with crossfire in a small case

and another mounted on an asus with plenty of clearance

You could have 4 of them in SLI and you still wouldn't need LC.

They cool themselves man, they're self contained little units with a fan that sucks in cool air from the case and vents the warm air out the back of the case. If you couldn't run them without some expensive aftermarket liquid cooling system how could they even sell the things?

The only time you will ever need LC for a GPU is if you are trying push it extremely hard with a high overclock. That's hardly cost effective though, big GPU LC setups are expensive and you're not likely to get a huge overclock like on CPUs, cheaper to just add another GPU into the mix.

i dont know that i would really call that "plenty" of room, those are actually quite similar in size to the 480, and not far off in temps, he did say that "hes running fine" but he didnt say anything about temps in the post

im not saying the responders are wrong, im just saying that there is a difference between good and good enough, and i would definitely call stock cooling and a cramped case good enough for 2x480s, but i would never reccomend it. the cooling on the cards is by no means useless, but extra air cooling on them could never hurt, or at least some room to dissapate a little heat
i do agree though with the comment about only needing lc to do some real overclocking

i will say on the other hand though that i too am responsible for furthering comments about the heat off the 480 series, but the more i look, the less bad they seem. i mean 97 load sound pretty scary to me, but the 5870 is showing around 93, not the huge difference that a lot are making it out to be

yea, that will basically come down to what res you wish to use, a 480 has some serious power, you have to go pretty high res with high aa / af before you will see a benefit from sli

One GTX480 will rock any game at 1920 x 1200.

When you start playing at  2560 x 1600  and above is where SLI really starts to shine.

1,2,3,4 GTX 480's will not rock any game at 1920 x 1200, not even remotely close, if rock mean getting 40-50 FPS min with max settings... there are more games that it cannot do that than there games that even use Physx. Smile

matters the resolution, matters the game, and matters the settings, but one 480 will be fine for a year to year and a half or so with 1920x1200 or smaller res, 2 480's should get you 2-3 years tops. no GPU solution will last more than 2-3 years, and still be able to play new games at high settings.. plus new direct X, and other features make GPU's obsolete faster than any other hardware.

I currently run Metro 2033 with everything maxed (DX11 and PhyX enabled) and it is smooth as silk.

Don't get me wrong. I am a power gamer after all so more = better, but if I were you I would get one card right now until:

1. You start running games at higher Res.
2. Games have caught up to the performance of a single GTX480.

I find it impossible to believe that 10FPS is good... even on a 12" monitor  a single GTX 480 will see 15-16 FPS...3 GTX 480's still have a very hard time running this game, and your single does beter?? I think you are not setting it on maximum settings. lol

Hmm.. will have to check again.

Does look amazing though.

I did not think that much of the game. After about 6 hours in I got bored.

It did make me re-install Fallout 3 though  :)

While I have your attention Justin I was considering moving to Liquid cooling.

What are you currently using as a setup and what would you recommend if you were going to pick something up today?

I am using a Antec p160 case that will most likely get upgraded with the LQ purchase. I was thinking Obsidian Series 800D but the Lack of SATA 3 backplane has me put off.

I would not recomend water cooling to anyone really... you either do it half assed and end up with a hot, loud mess, or do it right, and it costs a ton of cash...

Bullseye , you are going the wrong way!!! You should NOT do SLI until you absolutely need to. By that time, there will be new cards out, maybe a whole new tech that will give you a much better upgrade path than 2X obsolete cards.

Whatever you do, do not go SLI, and then gimp yourself with 470's. I doubt that setup would be worth it at all.

Yeh, and Metro sounded like a crap game to me, and now I know.

I think I will keep getting new cards as they come out.

The Evga deal where you can trade your card in after 90 days of purchase is still valid??
