Hi guys,

I'm looking for some help. I recently ran into a problem with my system freezing sporadically forcing a manual restart. Then it got to a point where windows would freeze after I typed my password at the welcome screen. Rebooting in safe mode I can login windows normally. Event logs aren't much help since they don't have a chance to write when the system freezes...

After another hour or so of trying different things I decided to do a fresh windows install. Everything goes fine until windows updates installs the video drivers for my gfx. Reboot and bam it freezes at windows login screen. I do a quick boot to safe mode, restore to before installing the gfx drivers, and it works fine again. Installing other software/drivers goes fine. Then I try gfx drivers on the CD that came in the DS Binder, and yep it freezes again on login screen. Restore to previous point and hey it works fine again. Obviously I can't do any gaming or anything video intensive but the system works fine from what I can tell without the gfx drivers installed. Generic VGA drivers are what I'm using for the time being.

It seems the Nvidia drivers would be the culprit, unless I'm overlooking something.

Anyone have ideas as to what else I can try to fix this? I know I should probably call support but I have to wait until Monday, so I figured I would try here since I know you guys are smart.

well.. it could be drivers but it could be a problem with the card itself

you could try stress testing your system with the generic vga or you could save your OC profile and reset bios defaults. with wierd problems like this its always a good idea to remove the overclock first, an oc can cause wierd issues

actually, first, i would try reseating the card entirely, power cables and removing it/replacing it on the mobo

let us know if you make any progress

So when you install the drivers for the 480 is when you get the crash?

if yes then make sure you don't let windows install drivers, get the drivers from nvidia's site.

So far I've tried drivers from the CD that came with the system as well as the drivers directly from the Nvidia website.

I've also gone in the BIOS and reset to defaults to remove the overclock. I've reseated the video card and disconnected/reconnected the power cables to it.

Still no change...

I think I'm going to reinstall windows one more time and disable windows update before it starts installing stuff. I want to be sure that didn't mess anything up.

Still main symptom is system completely freezing after I type in my password and says welcome and the little circle stops spinning and it just stays there...and this only occurs after installing videos drivers and rebooting.

Let me know if you guys think of anything else.

nah, if that freeze happens every time you install any driver, sounds like the video card is probably bad... especially if it works without the drivers

just out of curiousity, did you reseat the ram and the rest of the cables? never hurts to be sure

You're going to love this... I disabled all the Windows Aero features like transparency etc. Installed the nvidia drivers and hey it loads to desktop fine...

I think I have an 8800GT sitting in my old PC. Shouldn't hurt to put that in to test right?

I don't think disabling Aero is what let me get in this time, I think it may have to do with the system being cold. After I ran a game for about 10 mins it locked up and rebooting I could not get back to desktop again(even with Aero turned off)... so something happening when video card warms up? I'm just thinking out loud...

Not sure if I will have time tonight to open up my old system.

hmm...how long can you get the system running? I'm not sure whether you have enough time to get in a diagnostic program or not. Anyways, if you can, at least try to clean off as much visible dust from your system as possible. Make sure all power cables to the card is in the right way, heck, reseat the card just to be sure. If it still doesn't work, the card might have a manufacturing defect or something that could be causing it to overheat, but no guarantees that it's the culprit.

If you get a chance to install drivers again, try out the Clean Install option in the nvidia driver installer to wipe any older drivers that could be causing some sort of conflict (not sure whether you did that yet)

Did a little search seems this is happening to a few with 400 series and describes exactly what is happening to me. http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=479735

I will try my old 8800GT tomorrow to confirm. Looks like I may need to RMA the 480.

My system is not overheating, there is barely any dust inside since it's still pretty damn new and it has dust filters on the air intakes. I also keep my room pretty cool, especially easy to do in the winter.

I did try the "clean install" option, unfortunately it didn't help.

If it works fine with the 8800GT, then the card may have just gone bad and we'll take care of you by sending a replacement.

From the EVGA Thread:

Re:Tired of it (Install 480 driver then can't login to windows without freeze)

TWO WORDS: DRIVER CONFLICT

you are all suffering from a severe case of IRQ Conflicts
here is the solution:
http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=531113
and another good tip:
 http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=535593

Could also be a power related issue.

One suggestion I found said to continually press F8 after the BIOS screen and before windows is starting to load.  Once you have the Windows boot options, select low-resolution mode (640x480), then once in Windows set your resolution again and you should be good to go.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

I'll try the bit about the booting in low res(can I even move the mouse in 640x480? lol) and check the sound drivers to see if that makes a difference before throwing in the 8800.

I'll let you guys know how it goes tonight.

Nothing else I tried with the 480 seemed to help.

I just pooped in my old but trusty 8800GT and it works like a champ. Looks like the 480 hardware is at fault.

I actually used the exact same drivers for the 8800 that I used for the 480. Glad to be back to semi-normal
