Could someone help me decide which of these two cards are better? From an outsiders perspective, you would think the 9800 would be better because its newer... and I've done some research on speeds and the such that say so as well.  However, why do the 8800s still seem to top the charts?  Is it because of the 256mb more memory?

I've been looking at these also, am I'm going with 9800gtx sli due to being a little better and I believe they run cooler/ less power.

Go for 9800.

Also, if you can wait another month, I suggest you do so and get GTX260 or GTX 280.

All the reviews that I've seen have the 8800GTX testing slightly better than the 9800, but those tests were also before overclocking.  From what I've read, the 9800 has been clocking really well w/o heat issues.  I went with the 8800GTX (768MHZ overclocked edition).  Stock overclock gives me a little more peace of mind.

Think of it this way,

At high rez (1900X1200 +) and 4AA+ the 88 GTX/Ultra will be a superior card then the 98GTX and even the 98GX2, due to the greater memory bandwith as well as memory amount.

Some question on whether you really need AA at those rezes though.

There really isnt much of a performance boost between the 9 and 8 line of Nvidia cards, i think the major focus of the company was to decrease overall cost and in turn, reduce the prices of cards giving them greater market share.

Has hard as it sounds, the GX2 is actually one of the better deals out right now for new builds, as you can see with the DS pricing, people claim the GX2 is just two 88GTS cards, and in some reguards it is, but if you look at the price difference between a GX2 and a SLI 88GTS, youll see the value in the GX2.

Id say the 9 line is decent for new builds. For upgrading out of an 8 card though, no way it better. Something tells me the new cards coming out soon are gonna rock though, making this whole question moot because nobody will want an 8 or 9 line card anymore lol.

Yes, everyone please choose the 9800's so that the price will finally come down on the 8800's and then I can get another Ultra for SLI.  If anyone wants to unload their gently used Ultra so they can get a 9800 for bragging rights to their buddies that their GPU is less than 6 months old, please feel free to PM me...oh wait you can't.Angry
Just respond here and I'll get back to you.

8800 GTX SLI would be better than a single 9800 GX2.

Honestly the more I keep hearing about the 280GTX you might wanna hold off just to see if the rumors are true. It looks to be one hell of a card. If i ended up with an EVGA GX2 (forgot to request it, crossing my fingers) and if the rumors are true (I somewhat hope not lol) im definally gutting my computer for the several weeks to step up haha.

I got this from the sli forums:

A word about 9800GX2:
I own 2 EVGA 9800GX2 SSCs in SLI, and it has such superb rendering, shader, physics (without a PCI PhysX card) and stuff that'll better 8800 Ultras or GTXs in SLI. I'd bought the GTXs and got Ultras as upgrades; so I've used all 3 of them now, and I know the best in terms of quality is 9800GX2. Only drawback is that 512MB of buffering memory is too low for such a phenomenal card. As a consequence, this card can run never before settings at never before fps very easily, but its memory gets too dumped up and it slows down at inconvenient times; imagine running Crysis all high 1680X1050 at 50 fps for about 20 min, and suddenly it drops to 5 fps for 1 min.

Comparison with SLI rigs of 8800GTX and Ultra:
8800 GTX and Ultra give consistently 20% lower fps but without drops, or "High" instead of "very High". Just a little less on settings, but with its 768MB buffering memory, though it's GPU isn't so powerful, a single 8800GTX or Ultra is almost equivalent to a 9800GX2 card (with 2 GPUs). This is because there is no bottle neck with 768MB VRAM for 8800s but with just 512MB VRAM per GPU, 9800GX2's superb performance is being chocked and making it under-perform. Sometimes, size does matter. Suppose a 2GB or 1.5GB 9800GX2 is released, it would show what a 9800GX2 really is without any bottle necks. Until then, if you have a 8800 card, it's not worth upgrading to 9800GX2.

So a second 8800GTX is a lot better than a 9800GX2 considering the price to performance ratio. And in case you think I'm an oddball or a blunderer, I suggest you take a look at the reviews of [H]ard forums also. They have experimented with FRAPS etc.. and they've also come only to my conclusion.

yea ill never understand why they gimped the memory on the GX2, if it had 1GB per card the thing would be perfect.

rumored info.

Though if true those specs are amazing they are what the 9800 cards SHOULD have been. I dont believe the 500 starting price AT ALL though. For that spec and what current cards are going for..id say closer to 750-950

Does anyone know how the standard 8800 GTX overclocks in comparison to a 9800 GTX? I'm limited on my spending amount a little so I'm either going to be going with a single GX2, two 9800 GTXs, or two reg 8800 GTxs.  If I were to in fact wait for the GTX280/260 cards to come out, I wouldn't probably be able to get one for a while because the price is probably going to be very high.
