It could be a smart business move if they have the talent in the marketing dept to do it properly....some of Nvidia's past PR blunders make me wonder....but it could mean good things.

I hardly think the partners and distributors are going to tell them to pack sand. They would lose their license to sell the product and have nothing to replace the revenue stream with. What they will do is what they have been doing all along, buying the reference boards from their current suppliers and make the profit margin on the "add ins", "extra's" and anyother way they can differentiate.....its not really any different than what MSI, EVGA and other Card brands are doing against each other already.
I dont think Nvidia is desperate, I think they are just trying something new. |

Nvidia is not a card brand, or, wasn't before this.
it is not new, many of the old, now extinct GPU guys did it.
One of their bigger AIB's already left them.
It is way different that what EVGA or MSI is doing..
Nvidia is using Fox con to build their boards for this Best Buy deal.

I want to amend my comment slightly, they aren't any more desperate than any other company in the current economic situation.
The move makes money for them, so its smart business for them, MSI, EVGA and the others are not going to have to do anything radically different than they already are...they are going to have to be price competitive in the free market, just like they had to be day before yesterday (or whenever this went down) And I also predict that no Brand is going to quit selling the Nvidia product over this move. I look at it this way, Fox con builds say 10,000 Nvidia based GPU's a month, the AIB's all get a certain percentage of them, there are only so many made. Then the designer of the card steps in and takes away from the AIB's to put their name on the card, and to sell to best buy.. that does take away potential cards from the AIB's, and also a potential Market. BB. It is not like Nvidia is making the cards, just putting their name on the same cards as their AIBs. |

Well it will be interesting to see how it shakes out. My preferred Brand of cards are no longer being made so I have no loyalty to any of the other vendors...I miss BFG already.

I think most BFG cards were made by Foxconn also.

I don't know but they always were top notch and gave me longer better life than EVGA or MSI brands.
Its definitely hard to find info on who all manufactures them...Google doesnt return much useful info :P Edited by MagiK - 06 Oct 2010 at 3:56pm |

IMO, I think it's a pretty stupid move, like justin's saying. best way to piss off your resellers.

Say they do "piss off" the resellers, what are they gonna do about it?
If you know anything about the retail market, you know that the resellers get very little say in this kind of thing, they cant do jack about it. If one says screw you that means more money for their competitors. |

that is correct, sometimes they jump to other compaines, and Nvidia is well behind ATI in market share, so they need al the sales they can get, and this is why they did the best buy deal, BFG stands for "Big f**king Gun" lol use to be the ones to supply BB, so BB asked Nvidia to do this for them.

I knew what BFG stood for, its why I bought my first one I knew what it was before they put it into Doom, when the BB New Jersey was on the prowl while I was in the Military she had the BFG's
For ATi having such a "big" lead in market share...I honestly don't know anyone in my real life that uses them, everyone is Nvidia....I run in the wrong circles |
