I'm curious which company you all think delivers the better GPU. You can base this on historic or current performance. |

I've always been an Nvidia fanboy (aka nvidiot).
Since the Geforce FX fiasco, they've been on top of their game. Their latest graphics card, GTX 280, is the fastest single GPU card around. I just ordered one of these for my new PC.

I've been an ATI fan due to their superior vividness and color saturation. nVidia tends to favor performance over natural hues, so ATI is better suited for HTPCs than nVidia. ATI are better for photo and media post work IMO. (Unless you're working with serious pro stuff).
I was happy with the one nVidia card I had, but it was a budget card. I think that ATI has always been about getting the most value for your dollar. |

Historically:
Value for the dollar: ATI
Overall performance: Depends on the application, but overall for gaming, NVidia (but you're going to pay for it).
Sometimes nVidia has the best "bang for the buck" - I don't think even with as fond of her HD4850 as she is, that Widdlecat would argue that the HD3870 was a better value than the competing 8800GT for gamers.
Sometimes it's ATI. The HD4850 is this season's 8800GT IMO.
If you are looking for ultimate performance at any price, that is going to be the GTX280 triple SLI right now. I personally think the GTX260 SLI is nVidia's top performer for the high res gamer at anything approaching a reasonable price, while ATI's HD4870x2 is also an outstanding value for high resolution gaming. If you're stumped as to which way to go, you need to research how these cards do in games you are likely to play, because honestly, much is decided by driver support.

If you are concerned about image quality etc go with ATI. If your soley concerned about performance go for Nvidia. I've had both, my last Nvidia card was two 7900GT's in SLI. They did very well, even outperformed my ATI 3870 IMO. I think when I switched I lost about 10-15 FPS. But, even for that loss, my games with the ATI 3870 looked 10x better. I was stunned.
