I have a quicky question re: overclocking a GPU.  I am anxiously awaiting delivery of my new DS System (it feels like it's been at stage 5 forever!!!!).

I am a complete technewb and I'm wondering if overclocking a GPU is something I should even consider.  I got one of the 920i7 CPUs with DS OC the CPU and an NVIDIA 260, opted out of the other overclocks at this time.

I live in Vermont, so sending a computer back to DS for anything other than disaster (*crosses fingers*) is something I'd like to avoid.

I don't plan on making any modifications initially, but might be interested in OC the GPU later on.

Figured I'd ask here to see how involved it might be...  :-)

Thanks!

Kim

for overclocking gpu.

1. Download and install EVGA Precision.

2. Input some numbers / raise the bars higher or lower.

3. Stress test.

4. Repeat step 2 and 3 if stress test fails.

5. Done.

I have to ask... is that test for me or the GPU?  :P

I'm sort of curious about GPU OCing as well. When you say stress test, do you have a specific program in mind??

Also, is it good to increase Core, Shader and Memory speed all at the same time? Or one by one until they're all stable, and then repeat?

doing them at at the same time get you there faster but you can do them separately, tho you should keep shader and core linked thus raising them at the same time.

What program should be used to stress test?

ATI Tray Tools should be used for stress testing. (Yes it works with Nvidia cards)

You should raise memory and core. The shader should be linked to the core clock.

Seem's I personally can't use ATI Tray Tools with my system (Ultimate 64) because "windows requires a digitally signed driver" which is CRAP! Anyways is there anything else? I did try to bypass it but nothing worked.

You can try rthdribl or geoform as well.

disable digital driver signing

[windows key] > type cmd | press CTRL+SHIFT + ENTER (to enter an elevated command prompt)
> type bcdedit.exe /set testsigning off then press ENTER > Restart your machine. Voila, gone

after you install ati try tools then enable it again if you like

I downloaded the rthdribl... I wasn't entirely sure what I was doing, but I opened up EVGA Precision and rthdribl and just went up 10 MHz at a time on Core speed linked with shader speed... and from 576 all the way up to 696.  It failed at 716 so I figured 696 would be safe enough. Should I lower it a bit more? It seems stable enough to me.  I got my Memory (so far) up to 1200 from 999.  I didn't feel like pushing it too much as it's about time for bed.. my new 3D Mark Score came out to P23763 =) I'm pretty satisfied with that!

ok... to be honest... alot of this sounds like a foreign language to me (my last computer science class was in the 80's and I only took what I needed to graduate)

Harleyman... any chance you need to check on your NH property... for old times sake  :P

I wouldnt OC my vid card. [mine is the superclocked 260] but if you feel youre dragging behind id just get another1. Its very easy to OC GPUs. But if you want to jump into hardcore OCing I recommend liquid cooling solutions. And pushing your CPU and FSB also. Keep us updated!! Good luck

Thermaltake sopranoRS101 Nvidia 780i SLI [3]
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700
4Gig OCZ RAM 800ghz
GeForce GTX 260 super clock.
700w OCZ psu
500Gigs HDR
Liquid cooling system [CPU]

If you do OC your GPU once you find a stable Core and Memory Clock should you run it at that or clock it down just a hair (say 5MHz on each)? BTW my card runs stable atm @ 96C with Core Clock OC'd only (stressing the hell outta it with rthdribl).

Make sure you run your GPU stress for 1 hr (I thought I was good at the 20 min mark but I'd freeze up sometimes). I could only go from 612 to 677 Core stable and playing with memory atm.

Here's my rthdribl settings I've been using (runs your card super hot):
environment: stpeters
model: skullocc
glare type: cheap lens camera
depth of field type: 6-blade iris (141 taps)
material: flint glass
Multisample: x16 Multisample
all auto changes off
Fresnel Effecett On
Fill Inside Transparant ModelIt On
Detail Maps (Fleck, Bump) On
exposure: auto

I was wondering does overclocking your gpu on your own void any warranties with DS.

My rigg came with EVGA presision tool preinstalled so I would assume it would not void the warrinty. If it did I do not think DS would have installed the program on my pc when I have XFX GPU's .

But to me its not even necessary on a high end rig..

I gained 10 fps in crysis and Cod5 runs at 80+ fps now.

Harleyman, what is the config of your of your pc and your res??? How are you getting 100fps?????

Also There is a noiticeable differance between 45 and 80 fps but you are right about not being a visual difference. Once you go 60+ fps in a firstperson shooter it is like you go in to hyperspeed and you move much faster. But still 45fps is not choppy

ok, my computer is here, and I'm getting it set up.

I updated windows, downloaded antispyware, downloaded software for my keyboard and mouse.

I am playing with precision right now, I went to their forums and found some suggestions for settings.

I have core clocked to 628, shader 1354, memory 1055, and fan speed at 100%

My GPU temp is running 37C, but all I'm doing now is downloading wow client  ^^

BTW this case is HUGE... and I'm loving all the glowy lighting!!! (it's better than a Christmas tree imo!)

sure wish I didn't have to work this week!!!

yeah Harley how are you getting so high of FPS?  Me??? I have my CPU up to 3.4 from 3.0 and I use EVGA precision and OC both my cards.  I only get max out of all my games is 60 FPS.  Even benchmarking with 3dmark06, Oblivion, FS9, all my games.
I know your going to say, why OC if you got SLI... true I know, I just want to see if there is a difference.  There isnt on my computer.
Now is my computer bottlenecking?  My ram is 1066 but because the CPU is OC'd its now at 1058 (something like that).  Now when I OC'd my CPU I never touched my Voltages.  I only changed the Freq.  I did notice (on my BIOS page that list the voltages) that every listing is in the green but one.  Of course that CPU is in the red.  Should I change that?  I think its a few points away from being in the green.

Oh and finally Im getting low temps.  You know living here in a place that is just like hawaii, makes it hard to keep you puter temps down.  So finally Im getting low 40's all around.  Yeah!

HM has a 4870x2 you have 2 x 8800 gts, ofcourse his card is going to out perform yours.

2 x 280 GTX are the contenders for the 4870x2, ofcourse that will change when the 295 GTX comes out.

Yeah, your right all the way Mason.  I should just not use 3dmark06 everyday... (JK).  I do have a stable rig and clean OS and the temps are down.  I guess Im trying to be like you big boys with the big toys and Im left with a not so big toy. (sniffle) lol
When the prices drop ill think about upgrading.  But wouldnt FS9 work a little better with a quad?
