If I get 4gb of ram at 2x2 in my rig,
and elect to have that ram OC'd by DSO

Once I get my rig, if I then purchase 4 more (exact match) gig at 2x2gb filling the other 2 ram slots on an ASUS mobo...

will the new 4gb be compatable with the overclocked ram (again, exact match brand)?
.... will the new 4 gb be oc'd just by inserting it?
or will there be 4gb oc'd and 4gb not oc'd?
or will the oc just reset with the new memory...

essentially, what'll happen?

thanks, (and perhaps another thanks for the infinate answers to my infinate questions)

You're very probably going to end up having to find the new timings that all 8GB of RAM will work at. If you have DSO tweak and tune the initial 4GB of RAM, the odds of a second set, even from the same brand and the same type, overclocking to exactly the same timings with 4 DIMMs filled is extremely small. It's probably also going to require a NB voltage adjustment. If you intend to fill all 4 DIMMs,the RAM cooler isn't a bad idea at all, but I would not count on being able to make use of the OC past the point you upgrade.

Keep in mind also that the RAM and CPU FSB speeds are related and changing the RAM OC may effect the CPU's OC. You may find that the overclock DSO sets neeeds some adjustment after you get done chaning the RAM speeds or timing. It would be easier overall for an overclocked system if you order the system with 8GB of RAM if that is what you want.

Overclocking is such a juggling game! As I've said before, I'm gonna leave it to the experts at DSO to fix me up if I ever overclock. Hey, someday, I'll get a more upscale rig... it could happen! Tongue

P.S. (thread hijack) I like what u did with that sig block for me tyler. It's awesome looking! I need to figure out how to do editing on gimp tho. My case is different from the one u pictured. I may take a photo or two and incorporate it into something like what you did tho. I have a Lian-Li PC-A05B case btw. Not very flashy hehe.

Ah shoot. I thought you had your stats listed in one of the threads on configurations as having a 650i. Sorry about that.

I think I'll have to thread jack my thread back

how easy, fun and/or effective is installing your own fans? It sounds really interesting and like something that could put that personalized touch to a rig.

Any websites/literature?

Installing your own fans on a prepared fan mount is both easy and effective. Modifying a case to accept a fan where there is no mount provided is probably not going to be easy if you're asking the question, and depending on the material that needs to be removed, can be a real pain in the backside even if you do know what you're doing. The job is so basic on a manufacturer prepared mount, I don't believe I have ever seen a how to. You can find how to's on mods involving cutting holes in cases on various sites around the web, but this is something best done with nothing in the case, so it's something you would normally do pre build. There are also drive bay conversion kits sold that will allow you to turn unused drive bays into additional cooling capability. These kits range in price from around $20 USD to over $50USD, and come with instructions.

IMO, stick to the bay conversions and prepared fan mounts.

Back to my OC question, if I intend to add ram in the future, should I not have DS OC my CPU due to the timings?

because I do not know anything about oc'ing, and it seems like jsut getting the ddr2 8gb might save the time and hassle...

I can tell you I added a fan to a fan mount in my 950si case, it was dream like easy, popped open the case, snappes the fan into the mount, plugged it in and ran the wires so they would not dangle and look like garbage... done Star

About 10 Minutes from open case to close case and power up.
