Hi guys its been just a week since I've received my DS rig and everything is going great so far. But I have one question regarding my cpu's temp. Normal idle temp for my cpu is about 48-50C. I never really put it through much load other than playing games. Since I received the rig I keep an eye on the temps of gpu and cpu every once a while when I game. So normally when I play BFBC2 the temp for the cpu is around 78-80 degrees, and today it stay at 82C for a few times. And then I tried to torture test it with prime95 today and only few minutes into it, the temps shoot up to 88C so I stopped it. Are these temps too high?

here is the oc settings DS did:

Overclocked Processor Settings

Processor Speed GHz: 3.9
CPU Multiplier: 22
Voltage CPU VCore: 1.3875
VDroop Control: Yes

yes those temps are too high for safety, post a screen shot of CPUZ on the CPU and Memory tabs
open realtemps, run prime 95 for a minute or until your temps get to 83 or more, stop it and screenshot realtemps
then use MSI afterburner, open a game and play for like 20 minutes, then upload a screenshot of afterburner

(use imageshack for your image hosting and just post links here)

I'm confused of why DS would ship your system if they knew the CPU temps were this high. They test each system in 90F - 106F overnight, and I know your room isn't that hot.

I'm not an expert in overclocking, but could it be that 3.9ghz is too much and the vcore is too high? The HAF X and the Noctua should be sufficient with such an OC, regardless.

IMHO, I always feel a limit of 3.4ghz or 3.5ghz max is safe.

its the temp/voltage that matters, not the speed

its possible his heatsink was jarred during shipping, but we have to troubleshoot to know that for sure

You wouldn't believe how much reading I have done on OC'ing. That being said, I can't believe I missed the speed part, haha. Thanks for the correction.

@goodman247,

The highest your CPU cores got during testing here were 79'C and that was with a full test suite of LinX and Prime95.

How warm is the room you are in? Can you verify the CPU fans are spinning? I recommend re-seating the CPU heatsink if possible. You can always contact us directly and we can help you.

the cores do look a little warm, but not as bad as i thought, sounds like your ambients are either higher than what you think they are OR the case placement is choking the intake/exhaust when i was near 1.4 vcore i definitely saw temps in that range but i was able to get back down to 1.375 with some help from qpi/vtt adjustment so either the chip just needed some more voltage than normal or the voltage may have been set generously high
the idle temps look a little high, did you check to see that both fans on the heatsink are moving?

the video temps look perfectly fine to me

I've checked and the fans on the noctua is moving. I think the placement of the case might have something to do with the temps, I guess I will try to move it. Do you think I should do something to change the cpu settings for now? Because the idle temp is high and its at 78c when I play game. Or I should move the case and then check back?

thats up to you, if you prefer to leave the case where it is, you may consider dialing back the overclock, but if you move it, id wait and check after

remember, for most purposes, case cooling works much like water flow (without gravity lol) you need to make sure the case not only has room to dissapate heat in the sense of radiation but also has plenty of room to get the hot air away from the case as easily as possible.
for example, if you have a closed bottom desk, and you put the case under the desk and push the back of the case in to a corner. the heat will have no where to go, so you are effectively warming up air, then using that air as intake, which will warm it to its peak and force your temps to that peak

for the best result, id try moving the case to as open of an area as possible, run the same tests and see what it looks like

OK I moved the case to the best location possible hehe, and it seems the processor's temp decreased a little bit? At idle it still hovers around 47-49C and I just ran prime95 for about 30mins and the temp went to highest at 88C but if I take the side panel off it stays at 85C. Do you think those temps are still too high? And thanks a lot ender for helping and replying so quickly.

I've lowered the vcore to 1.364V but at idle it still hovers at about 45C and running prime95 for an hour it never really went over 81C. Do you think these temps are still too high? I know that I should run prime95 for at least a few hours in order to know if it's stable, but I don't really feel comfortable having my cpu to run at 81C for hours. Should I try to re-seat the noctua? But I don't have any TIM to reapply.... And I don't really know how to set some of the settings of the OC since I'm a noob when it comes to that.... Any suggestions ender?? Or anyone??

no, see.. youre really not at a bad range, it is higher than average, but your overclock is also higher than average
prime will get you high temps but really.. how often to you stress your PC that much?

i wouldnt be too concerned about it. lowering the vcore could kill your stability, so if you do that i'd reccomend running a 24 hour prime95 to make sure you didnt lose stability. with a 178 bclk it is not suprising to see those load temps where they are, you may be a bit over the curve on DSO's site for temps, but you are also at the max free overclock range, which not all PCs are.
Digital storm did that overclock, and its covered under your warranty. changing your hardware is not going to help you, based on what youve told me, there is nothing wrong with the noctua or case cooling. so from here id say 2 options

1 - leave it alone and enjoy it, but keep realtemps/coretemps on so you can see if it ever heats into a dangerous range (which everyone should do on their pc anyway)

2 - if it concerns you, you can fill out a template ill give you and we can back down the OC a little until you are getting the temps you prefer ( or you could contact DSO if you prefer to have them help you do this )

If it is stable, don't worry about the temps, it is under warranty.

Playing BFBC2, what resolution? looking at MSI, it looks like your GPU's are not scaling at all? With MSI you can use the on-screen display to show GPU2 scaling while you are playing, both GPU's should be 90%-99% while playing.

Ended: that's true I shall keep the original so oc and since it falls under the warranty I should be fine hehe.

Justine: I'm not sure how to see if I'm scaling or not.... Where do I go on msi to do so??
