This is going to be an odd one so please bare with me:

I am looking at finally tossing my HP and getting a "big boy" computer from Digital Storm.  Quick and Dirty to stay under 2K is

Case: Digital Storm Twister LITE (Black Aluminum Edition) Power Supply: 620W Corsair HX (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition)Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz (1066MHz FSB) (8MB Cache)Motherboard: nVidia 680i LT Core 2 Quad (By: eVGA) (nForce 680i SLI)

Memory: 4GB DDR2 Corsair at 800MHz XMS2 (Dual Channel) (Extreme-Performance)
Floppy / Card: Digital Media Card Reader (Black)
Hard Drive 1: 320GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) 1: DVD-ROM/CD-ROM (DVD Reader 16x / CD Reader 40x) Optical Drive 2: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x)
Network Card: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections)
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 8800GT 512MB (By: eVGA) (PCI-Express) Sound Card: Motherboard Multi-Channel High Definition Audio (7.1 Channel) Physics Card: - No Thanks

Cooling: Air Cooled Stage 2 (Silent Artic Cooling Heat-sink (Copper Heatpipes)

Overclock Processor: Yes, Overclock the processor as much as possible with complete stability
Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts)

Mindset:

Overclocked Quad gets me close to 3 GHz with 4 cores down the road as needed

Vista 64bit so I can get use of the full 8 gig ram and add 2 more some day perhaps.  ( I heard some issues trying to go to 8)
8800 GT seems the best bang for the buck and I may go SLI someday thus the reason for the 680 board and 620 Corsair.

Now the big thing..........

My eyesight sucks even with glasses.  (Supposedly functionally blind.....the blindness without the tax write off...LOL)

What that means is the when I play WOW and LOTRO and soon Age of Conan....I dont go to high rez becasue I cant see the chat or hotkeys, etc.

I dont do much FP but like solo RPg's like the Witcher and NWNights.

I do have a 24inch Samsung so I can make my Word and Excel fonts huge.......gaming I cant go to high res becasue my HP sucks but my eyesite could never take 1600 by 1800 anyway.

Any thoughts on this build and how that may correlate with overkill on resolution limitations?

P.S.  I am more intersted in game speed and lag as well as nice color rather than extreme res for detail....for obvious reasons......

Appreciate any input and I can buy my computer after some solid feedback.

This board is the best by the way......great for newbies like me

The real problem you're going to run into is larger screens run natively higher resolution - so the REAL answer to your dilemna is actually not to decrease resolution, but super-geek yourself with an amazingly oversized screen!

Low-end 32" or 37" LCD HDTVs often support resolutions like 1920x1080 (16:9) which - while it is a massively high resolution, it's at a size large enough you can still enjoy those games =)

The other side of things is games like WoW and stuff - you can use the high resolution, but SCALE UP the size of the UI elements so they're just as big - while enjoying smoother/prettier graphics (not that you'll ever notice the detail improvements).

The 24" you have runs 1920x1200 natively I'm sure.. so scale up the UI elements in WOW, you'll be fine... but when you run those resolutions the GT gets a bit more tasked (it runs slower than the GTX/Ultra at that res and higher) - but it's not that big of a deal.

For 37" screens - I'd recommend looking at Westinghouse (no joke) as they pack a good box into a $1000 pricetag... if you're going to go overkill on the CPU, why not enjoy a little visual happiness to go with it! =)
