Hey guys, thanks for everyone who's helped me out so far, but I could use some more advice/feedback/opinions. Right now I'm basically looking at three options.
Option 1: the current ODE V2 Level 4. Option 2: waiting a month or two to see if the ODE 4 switches back to one of the newly released Nvidia cards (assuming I can be patient enough). Option 3: the custom build below (which is almost identical to the ODE 4, except I added more memory, selected a GTX 670, and there's a different cooler and higher OC setting).
Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Corsair Carbide 300R Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 3770K 3.50 GHz (Unlocked CPU) (Quad Core) (Requires Z77 Motherboard) Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-V LX (Intel Z77 Chipset) (Does Not Support SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 800W Corsair GS (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (120GB Solid State (By: Corsair) (Model: Force GT Series CSSD-F120GBGT-BK) (SATA 6Gbps) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital/Seagate/Hitachi/Samsung (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card(s): 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 2GB (Includes PhysX) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: H20: Stage 2: Digital Storm Vortex 120mm Radiator Liquid CPU Cooler (High-Performance Edition) H20 Tube Color: - Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks CPU Boost: Stage 2: Overclock CPU 4.5GHz to 4.8GHz (Requires Pro/Deluxe/Sabertooth Motherboard) Graphics Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Memory Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory OS Boost: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 10-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty
Budget: around $2,000 (no higher than $2,150). Use: gaming (on a single monitor), FRAPSing, and light video editing.
And, I also have a few questions concerning the custom build... 1. Should I upgrade to a better cooling system? 2. I'm not at all knowledgeable about overclocking. How does a higher overclock setting/stage benefit me (and do I have to activate it or does it happen automatically)? Just wondering if I should keep the OC at Stage 2 or downgrade to Stage 1 or remove the OC all together…. 3. Anyone know the difference between: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (Model: Black Edition) [+$179] and 1x (1TB Western Digital/Seagate/Hitachi/Samsung (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) [+$162]? Is it worth getting the slightly faster HDD, or should I just save the extra $17? Edited by LinkGirl - 21 May 2012 at 5:12pm |

1)
With a single graphics card, i would normally say that that would be fine. Overclocked Ivy Bridges, however, do run pretty hot. I would say, however, that you should be fine, although I am not an expert on cooling. 2) Higher overclocking will give you a performance boost. However, it produces more heat, and with the lousy thermal paste that Intel used with Ivy Bridge, your 3770K will probably produce a very large amount of heat when overclocked. 3)The WD might run a miniscule bit faster, but if you already have an SSD as your boot drive, it does not really matter which you get as a secondary drive. |
