I've spent the past couple of days researching the ODE1, and wanted to confirm that if I wanted to upgrade from DVD to Blu-Ray, the cost would be $50 for DS to change, plus $60 for the price difference between the DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) the ODE1 comes with, and the Blu-Ray Player/DVD Writer option in the configurator?

Only DS can say for certain, but that's my understanding as well.

Just buy a bluray on Newegg.com and change or add a drive yourself. You'll save money, have a spare dvd drive and it's VERY easy to do.

Yes, any change to an ODE system has a $50 charge, plus the price difference cost of the new/different item. Like AndydViking said, it's probably best just to purchase a Bluray drive and install it yourself.
It will be easiest to just add the drive compared to trying to change out the drive that will come with the system. Also, as was previously mentioned, it gives you a spare drive in the system. |

Yeah, I found the same or similar Blu-Ray for ~$80 on newegg.
So then adding that $80, plus $180 for the SSD, plus the $65 for shipping, puts this hypothetical ODE1 at $1865. Is this the best bang for the buck, or does DS have a custom-build that opens up a pathway for SLI down the line (given that the ODE1 doesn't have that capability)? Mind you, if I did wait to add a 2nd gpu, it would probably be for a couple of years, to give a bit of time for prices to drop off. I guess right now my decision is whether I want SLI or not? If not, the ODE1 with the bits of hardware I throw in would be enough. But if I did want SLI, then time to clean the slate and go back to the drawing board. Does this sound about right? |

for dual sli we need to go custom.
its pointless to go sli after 2 years, in that time, your dual sli would be weak for that time, on top of that you can't find a gpu after 2 years and if you did it will cost more then a new gpu, for exmaple find me a 470 gtx right now or a 275 gtx, then tell me the prices for them vs a 570 that outperforms both. |

Good point. Waiting 2 years to add a 2nd GPU would be too long of a wait.
I think it all boils down to whether I could get a comparable SLI-capable system to the ODE1 I spec'ed out for almost the same price. If I'm thinking of upgrading the GPU on that ODE1, I'd have to also think about upgrading the PSU (which adds cost on the backend). Just saw your reply in another thread regarding the PSU in the ODE1, DST4ME. So it looks like I definitely need to keep that in mind as another added cost. :) Edited by manuel-mg - 10 Jan 2012 at 7:35pm |

Well then also keep in mind that the price of the ode is so low because of the parts it has, and thus its price is impossible to beat with a custom config, so the short answer to your question is no you can't find a custom config for the same price as ode 1.
sli capable system will go for around $2000 |

Hi manuel-mg... Not to get between you and DST, I'm not a config guy like others but this is what DST is talking about. He'll tweek it some but this is an idea until he gets back to ya. The difference between this and ODE 1 is Deluxe mobo for sli and 800W ps. This runs $1990. Config # 642347 A better config with 1050W ps for future sli config #642352 is about $2134. Thanks for the rough outline, bprat.
This shines a bright light on the difference between going SLI and not going SLI. config 642347 would still be almost 2300 by adding a 120gb intel 320 ssd and lite-on blu-ray player/dvd writer combo DIY-style. config 642352 would be a little over 2400 by doing the same as above. And both of these configs would still need a 2nd GTX570 (currently at $340 at newegg). Decisions, decisions, decisions. *sigh* |

![]() For that kind of money why not ODE 3?, but then you get the hydro not air cooler and the ps isn't as beefy but ya do get sli 570's.. Tough call. Good luck.

Heh, I was looking at the ODE3 once I found the custom-builds would be at around the same price, but the ODE3's SSD solution is the Corsair as opposed to the Intel320, and I would still need to throw the Blu-Ray player into the ODE3 (adding $80 onto the $2340 that the ODE3 runs), and what you mentioned: the hydro vs air cooler, and the lower-powered PSU. |

No not comparable, much better parts, like the case, psu, mobo, etc., and better upgrade-ability. the build bprat22 gave you can do dual sli anything, unlike ode 3 or 1. change oc to stage 2, add a ssd and decide if you want need sli ability, if not price can be lower a little. OK, went with bprat22's 2nd build (with the 1050W PSU). only change I made was oc to stage 2. new build #642489.
the ssd, I would do it myself (120gb intel 320). but to be honest, with the res and gaming I do, SLI would be overkill. worse comes to worse, in 2+ years, I can upgrade the GPU to something a couple of steps up from the gtx570. Build #642489 would be my SLI solution: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master 942 HAF X Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67 Deluxe (Intel P67 Chipset) (New & Improved B3 Revision Without SATA 3G Issue) System Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1050W Corsair Pro Silver 1050HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (16MB Cache) (Model: Blue Edition) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) (EVGA Edition) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Corsair A70 Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks LaserMark: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 2: Overclock CPU 4.5GHz to 4.8GHz (Requires Pro or Deluxe Series Motherboard) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty So, what would I be able to cut down on this build to lower the price and be a single GPU solution? First thing to go would be the 1050W PSU, lower to the Corsair 750HX? |

If you think you don't need sli then go with 750hx psu.
you can change the mobo too if you like but that is little savings. or you get ode 1 and pay to change psu with the 750whx. you add ssd, and top fan: haf 200mm non led fan Ask for vcore lower then 1.4 for your oc. Edited by DST4ME - 11 Jan 2012 at 5:14pm |

Hi DST4ME,
I am also looking harder at the route of upgrading an ODE level 1 with a more scalable PSU (750HX), and SSD - I believe it will give me everything I really want for a bit cheaper than the custom build we came up with. (Just sacrificing the ability to go for a stage 2 overclock really.) Are you also suggesting additional cooling for the ODE case? Just trying to confirm as that wasn't clear to me. Thanks, Uber

The 200mm is for the haf.
Honestly if budget is super tight then you guys should go with ode 1, but if you can spend the extra, you should go with the custom build, it endsup being a much better pc at the end IMHO. |

hmm, looked into it, and yeah, having DS pay to change the PSU would be cheaper than doing it myself. wow. nice looking out, sensei! ($50 for the change and $85 for the price delta between the cx600 and the 750hz in the configurator, while $145 to buy it and then I'd have to do the hardware swap myself.)
But like you said in a different thread, the PSU upgrade can be done down the line as opposed to Day 1. So: $1539 for the ODE1, $65 for shipping = $1604 for the ODE1, out the door. Then throw in a 120gb for ~$170 sometime in 2012, and an ~$80 Blu-Ray player if I ever want to do Blu-Ray on it. ~$145 for the PSU once it craps out. That's two kilobucks total. For $400 more, I'd have the build bprat22 configured with SLI capabilities, the SSD and the Blu-Ray. Yeah, the budget doesn't permit going the custom-build route just yet. Maybe in 2017.

If ya don't care or can't afford slr, then ODE1 is the way to go. Get a warranty upgrade to 5 yr labor / 3yr parts and worry about Ps much later. Custom configure does give ya better components but with the warranty let DS pay for future problems minus shipping. The ODE case has good cooling as-is for single gpu. Just my thoughts and Best of Luck.

Given the warranty upgrade to 5/3 is $200, and shipping each way would be $65, I think I'll take my chances on the 3/1 warranty.
Now all I need to wait for is some funds to get transferred from one account to the other and I'll give DS a call to order. Then a trip to my favorite online retailer (or whichever has the better price) for the SSD.
Thanks for the advice guys. |

well keep in mind that for $400 more you are getting better case/mobo/psu/ssd/bd, just fyi.' if ode is the route to go for you then go for it.

manuel-mg... Congrats with which ever way you go.
![]() Custom config does give you more as was said and you do get alot for the $400, but with funds tight sometimes 'ya gotta do what ya gotta do'. Just to clarify warranty...3 years parts I meant would be paying for shipping of individual parts, like ps, fans, etc not necessarily whole rig. I'm big on the warranty thing for pc's so that's just me. If you game at 23" and 1920 res or lower and are happy with high settings BF3, high to ultra Skyrim, high FSX, etc, then single 570 should make ya happy. Yeah, right now the budget is limited to 2k. But then I realized I'm probably looking at getting money from Uncle Sam in a couple of months. If I set aside some of that for the new computer budget, I could probably go the custom route.
Right now, the monitor I'm gaming on is a 24" Dell ST2420L that won't be getting upgraded any time soon, and currently have a GTS250, so Skyrim is running at lowest res possible, medium settings. Over the years I've built my own rig, gotten a crap custom build from a vendor I won't name, and right now a mass-production build from an industry giant. None of these machines have been able to play "modern" games at native res, high display settings, out of the box. Even if I went with the ODE1, it would be the first system I owned that would have a GPU powerful enough to do the above. So now, I'll need to have an internal dialogue with myself to decide whether replacing my current desktop can wait for a couple of months, or if I will be getting an ODE1 next week. |

Re-did the numbers after getting my W2's. Uncle Sam's not gonna be sending me as much as I thought, heh.
So instead of waiting for the custom build in a couple of months, I pulled the trigger on an ODE1. Called the order in today and it's currently in Stage 3. Picked up the Intel 320 (120gb) on my way home from work. Most definitely looking forward to the faster-running computer. :) |
