Budget:
around $2-2.5K (but would not be disappointed to go less!)

Expectations:
I would like to play Rift, SW:TOR, etc. on the highest graphical settings and not worry about heat or system noise, as well as be somewhat prepared for games of the future, like Kingdom of Amalur:Reckoning. I am a bit tolerant of having to turn video settings down in raids or ops where a there are lots of people and effects, but I would love not to have to.

It's unlikely that I will be playing any FPS's.

I know this is not a detailed configuration question, so I hope this is the right spot for it. I'm looking at ODE level 2 and level 3--the main difference between the two being one graphics card or 2. I've been told that the games I play really don't benefit from SLI, but I really don't know if this is true. (After a lot of reading, I had pretty much settled on building a system based on i7 3930 and one nvidia 580, but after reading reviews of ODE, it seems like it might be a better fit--and at a lot more reasonable cost) I just don't know if I should go with the two GPUs or not.

Feedback appreciated!

A few things, first we need to know what resolution your monitor is, as that determines exactly what hardware you need to play various games.

The games you want to play are not vary demanding, depending on your resolution you should be looking at the ODE 1 or a similar custom build and not the ODE 2 or 3.

The ODE2 will give you a modest performance gain but that is due strictly to it having a SSD. The 570 and 580 are very close in performance, if the 570 can not handle a game based on your resolution the 580 will not be able to either. So if a 570 is not enough you will need to go SLI which means the ODE 3.

You do not need a 3930 or 3960 unless you are doing rendering or x3 SLI support. Let us know your monitor resolution and we can go from there.

I play with 2 monitors. The resolution on my main monitor is 1680x1050 (native) and the second, which I use for browsing, watching hulu/netflix or looking at who's talking in vent, is 1366x768 (native). This is according to NVIDIA Control Panel.

Thank you for the quick and already helpful answer!

If you are only playing on one monitor the ODE 1 will be more then enough for you. If you play on both you will need the ODE 3.

For your needs and your budget you would do well with that ODE 1, I would just recommend purchasing a SSD to add on your own and it will be perfect. Check out this drive, you can purchase it and install it in your ODE 1 to put your games on it for best performance.

It's best not to have DS add anything to the ODE as they charge an extra $50 for any changes plus the cost of the item since the ODE's are discounted for being prebuilt.
