ODE Level 3 for 2560x1600?

Will an ODE Level 3 give me sufficient frame rate on a 30" 2560x1600 monitor?

Games are SW:TOR, Crysis, Batman, the usual suspects...

Not sure if 2xGTX570 will do, or if I need a 2xGTX580 setup.

Hi Dreamin .....gaming at that level monitor and resolution would need the ODE 4 with the cf7970 or a tri-sli, 3 gpu 570, on the same x79 platform. 2x580 won't give you much more than 2x 570 to justify the expense.   This is assuming you want to play on high settings on games like BF3, etc.

Yes, want to play at high settings.

I like the idea of 3x 570, but ODE 4 is now a 2x AMD 7970... not sure if that'll do...

Alex from DS says the cf7970 are better than 3x570 in gaming.  I haven't seen any testing against tri-sli builds so not sure.
Here's a quote I gave to another member .....
 
"Just read a review at guru3D that HD 7970 crossfire (2 gpu ) hit 70 fps average with Crysis 2 at 2560x1600 res. Didn't mention monitor but probably 27-30". Just a FYI for whatever it's worth. That's the new ODE 4 config"

The engineers at DS know what they're doing, they changed the ODE 4 to Crossfire 7970's because that is what will give you the best performance. I often tell people to avoid tri or quad setups because you will lose performance scaling the more cards you interface together.

IMO, if you're serious about max settings across multiple monitors, or even one big ass monitor as you stated, the 7970's will kickass.

The two 7970's are slightly faster than three GTX 570's in our gaming tests. In addition, they take up less space, put out less heat in the chassis, etc... it's a win-win situation. Plus they have a higher memory buffer for extreme resolutions. We felt so strongly behind their performance and benefits, we kept the price of the ODE Level 4 the same too, even when the two AMD 7970's were more expensive. With the new update, the ODE Level 4 is an even more powerful gaming PC.

What you need to do Alex is compare the x2 7970 to the x3 570 2.5GB and not the 1.2GB. Testing against nearly equal amounts of VRAM will give you accurate results. Comparing the 1.2GB to the 7970 is 100% pointless as they are not the same thing, you have to test the 2.5GB.

It'd be nice if the review sites did the same but the fact remains the x2 7970 will cost people $92 more then the x3 570 2.5GB SLI and will give nearly equal numbers. The x3 570 SLI 2.5GB is the better and cheaper choice.

I'm referring to the ODE Level 4, I wasn't trying to make general statements. The original ODE Level 4 had three 1.2GB version cards. When we compared the original ODE Level 4 with the three GTX 570 1.2GB cards in Triple SLI versus the two AMD 7970's in CrossFire, the 7970's were slightly faster, but, that wasn't the only reason, it produced lower thermals and took up less space in the system (two video cards versus three).

But the fact remains the x2 7970 CF does to provide playable frame rates for the OP's resolution so for the OP we have to look at custom options and not the ODE 3 or the ODE 4.

The 7970 CF is not a bad choice and with the tiny case used in the ODE line, combined with the under performing PSU I can see how it makes sense on your end but it still will not be sufficient for the OP.

A custom build with x3 570 2.5GB SLI will be the best choice to provide playable frame rates with out reducing the graphics quality options in game.

If the OP (original poster) is looking for the best performance for the dollar, the ODE line would be best. I'm not sure if the OP has a strict budget or not. Two 7970's in CrossFire will play almost every game at 2560x1600 with butter smooth frame rates. A single 7970 pulls as much power as a GTX 570, the Corsair 1000W PSU in the ODE Level 4 isn't even being run at 75% capacity on full load at it's current configuration.

 
However, I don't believe an ODE Level 4 is a possibility has the OP would like an ODE Level 3. Two GTX 580's or (three GTX 570's / two 7970's) would be a better solution. If the ODE Level 4 is out of the OP's budget, a custom build would most likely be the best solution.

That's the key "almost every game" but almost does not count.Foing with x2 7970 CF with the ODE 4 will mean dropping over $3000 on a system that is going to fall short in several games.

It will also not be able to use any Physx options present in some of the games listed by the OP like the Batman series and ATI cards do not support Physx at all as it is strictly an Nvidia thing these days.

You guys at DS seem to like to push the newest option even if it's not the best for the person's needs.

Now this build #654823 does not get the benefit for the ODE's special prebuilt pricing but it will out perform the ODE 4 and will actually provide playable frame rates in all games, including games like Metro 2033, at 2560x1600. It also has a better secondary drive and a better case. The 690 II has more options for additional fans to help with it's temps.

There are always various options for each customers needs. Usually a lot our customers want the newer, next-gen technology in their systems.

And that is why some of us attempt to educate people against the lie that something being new means it's the better choice. The 7970 is a perfect example of that.
