Ok, So I bought an ODE v2 lvl 2 in July, and it is amazing. I should post a full review with pics, but it's been a busy summer. The short version is that I can max out the games that I've always wanted to (Shogun 2, Arkham City, Crysis 2) and retain silky-smooth framerates. This new level of gaming is great, but now I can never go back to the sub-60 screen chop of the past. The only way I was able to justify spending this much on a computer was to make it a "4-year investment", basically, I won't allow myself to buy a new computer until July of 2016. So now I'm looking at realistic ways to stretch the life of this very well-built computer, and I was wondering if it would be feasible to put another video card in at some point.
Right now, it has the Corsair 800W PSU, the Z77 V-LX Mobo, and one Radeon HD 7950. What I've been able to decipher so far is: 1) The Z77 V-LX does NOT support SLI, but does support AMD Crossfirex 2) The HD 7950 is a comparatively low power-consumer, pulling 144W during peak gaming situations (http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/HD_7950/25.html) Does anyone have insight on how adding another 7950 in the future would impact my PSU, case temp, performance, and Mobo? |

Hi Herkucheeze... The only potential problem I would see is that the second PCIe x 16 slot, the black one, is only a x4 wired slot, meaning the second card might not work at its full potential. Now, how much the second 7950 would be throttled by the x4 lanes I can't say. It will probably work and give you a boost, but not as if the slot was a x8 for example.
If the second, black slot, was a PCIe 3.0 slot it would be fine but I believe its a PCIe 2.0 slot, so no boost with 3.0 I think if you need to upgrade several months from now or next year, you might consider a newer generation single card, but that depends on the cost of course. Good luck. Edited by bprat22 - 13 Aug 2012 at 8:54am |
