Hey guys, been awhile. Good to see everyone still helping out others looking to buy DS. You guys do a hell of a job. Lots of customers count on good advice before making the plunge.
Hope everyone is doing great, especially after COVID, lockdowns, etc. Decided to buy my son a new rig. Of course, where else but DS. Look it over and see if I missed anything. Feels funny being on the other side of the table. Thought about DDR5 but decided not worth it right now for gaming. Almost went rtx3080 but for 1440p the 3070 will smoke anything. No 4k in the future. 16gb ram still seems good to go for my needs. Still no Noctua? What’s with that? Kidding. My Lumos from 4 years ago has the AIO cooler and works great. My Lumos from 2018 had the gtx 1080 and just upgraded to EVGA rtx 3070. Paid a good 50% more because of the way things are now. Everything else is the same and working great. DS builds a real good gaming rig. Have fun. Bill |

Wow, hi bprat22. Can't believe my eyes. ![]() Welcome back. I sure do hope you are doing well and taking care. The last couple of years have been taxing to put it mildly. I don't like to configurate systems (my ideas of overkill tend to be a bit extreme) but that sure looks like a very strong system for 2K. Storage Set 1 could be more than necessary but it can be partitioned for the OS and not a big deal. I use to get the 512GB SSDs but now go for the 1 TB ones. As to the rest, it sure looks like a winner. And yes, still no Noctua! And probably never as a standard option. Hope to see you more often. ![]() ![]() Edited by hoserator - 13 Feb 2022 at 3:49pm |

Looks great to me. I often recommend the 3060 Ti for builds like yours. It performs pretty darned well at 1440p, and seems the closest thing to a bang-for-buck option in this environment. That's with an eye toward maybe getting a much better deal by year end, or later. The 3070 was slated to be $499 MSRP, and look at it now. My thinking is that GPUs are really scaling up everything about gaming visuals and not just speed anymore. There's little doubt in my mind the 4070 will crush the 3080 on speed while it's gen 3 everything. The hope is it will be affordable again since Nvidia gimped the gaming cards for mining. But that's really just a sidebar FYI. I have no doubt you know what you want.
Really fun to see you.

Hey Cretae....Nice seeing you. ![]() I heard , rumors of course, that the new 40XX cards might need a big bump in psu capacity, like a 1200 watt instead of an 750/850 for example. That would hurt upgrades for those not wanting to spend the money or work to replace psu.. Plus if Nvidia and others don't stop the shopping bots from scoffing all the new cards up in nanoseconds, good luck getting one. You"re right about 3070 pricing. A $650 EVGA now is $1000 or so. Crazy. Have fun |

bprat22, you raise cogent issues. Shopping bots may well spoil the party. I'm optimistic an 850W PSU will handle all but the top cards, and a 4070 may be as high as most need to reach this time around. Hope that's not just my wishful thinking... really do. Thanks for the heads up on both issues. No surprise here you're already making a contribution.

I read supposedly up to 600w for the 4090. I find it difficult to believe though because: • Cooling the current tech at similar power levels requires extremes.. -- RIPJAY/RIPGN RTX 3090 Kingpin Recap: Extreme Overclocking Battle | Gamers Nexus (YouTube) --- ~700w max power draw -- Nvidia Doesn't Want You to Do This | Linus Tech Tips (YouTube) --- ~780w max power draw • Smaller manufacturing process plus (hopefully) greater processing efficiency should equate to a lesser need for much higher power draw.
EVGA has the 3080 12GB models at $1,250 and $1,300. Presumably, that would have (if it did exist) the FE version at $999 or $1,099. As much as I want things to change to benefit all consumers, my realistic attitude cannot believe it will happen any time soon -- maybe two years yet. Companies, such as Nvidia, continue to rephrase their claims about overcoming demand. Some YT tech channels have been stumbling over "Prices are going down!" "The GPU market will be back to normal by [next season/quarter]." for more than a year now with no (actual) evidence in sight. Additionally, even Nvidia's latest attempt to take advantage of the situation, 3090 Ti, appears to have melted in front of them (i.e., now rumored to be delayed indefinitely). Lastly, the overall scope is a depressing/frustrating reminder on the vast amount of ground needed to make up. Chip shortage: Ford, Volvo exclude safety features from new cars | Autocar Basically, enjoy the h*ll out of that 3070 because it will probably need to carry you down the foreseeable road ahead. |

Any thinking that gpus are going to be readily available anytime soon (and by soon I mean this year) is very optimistic. As to prices, there is such demand and such supply and that is what dictates prices. If there was were no demand, they'd be given them away when opening bank accounts. With inflation (and I know this might be a foreign concept to some) prices are not coming down. So, I tend to agree with MrCheetah and grab what you can now. From what I have read, if we ever see a 3090Ti it will need more than a 1000w psu! IMO, I don't think 8K monitors will catch for gaming anytime soon. They are really good for science/medical uses. 2K seems to be the sweet spot and 4K if you want to splurge.

MrCheetah….. you’re right about prices, etc. I tried for a year and a half, since 30xx launch for a new card. Couldn’t buy at any price until recently unless you get a whole new rig. Finally said, screw it, need to move on and spent the money. I didn’t really Need a new card, my gtx1080 still performed great, but a new toy is sometimes just wanting it.lol
Across the board, whether computers, cars or gaming consoles, this is a tough time to buy. Have fun.

Indeed, as long as a person is not interested in advanced RT, the 1080 (Ti) holds up very well, overall rising to the level of the RTX 3060 (Ti).
Six months later and I am still occasionally checking Series X availability and pricing.
From what I have seen, 1440p/2K/QHD at 100-165 Hz is the most sought after display choice, widescreen becoming more popular as well. Next, I assume, still plenty of 1080p/FHD gamers. Finally, some sporting 4K/UHD gear to marvel at games such as MSFS, Forza, Dirt 5, F1 2020, Star Wars, Far Cry 5, Hitman 3, .... Edited by MrCheetah - 06 Mar 2022 at 10:04pm |

bp it's been hard the last two years. Everybody on my Covid ECMO team has PTSD. So much death. And people threatening us. My hospital gave me so many t shirts that said Covid Hero, Healthcare Hero etc. And I can't wear them in public because people have come up to me and screamed and yelled. Insanity.
And I still do my job/calling and save as many lives as I can. If I was younger would be going with the Doctors Without Boarder's team that's leaving from my hospital to go help with Ukraine.
Good to see you.

On a lighter note, I hope you haven’t spilled any more coke in any of your rigs. I remember the “good” times.

oldlady RPGer,
Much respect for your service in taking care of folks during this pandemic. It is so crazy how one day people can be heroes and the next be treated like an enemy. Just crazy, When I grew up in the 50's & 60's people seemed more respectful to people who serve their community. I was a Radiological Monitor with our local CD before I joined the Army. In my 50's I got into caving and got my NREMT and did volunteer technical cave rescue in IL & MO. The NSS trained me in Cave Rescue and I participated in many rescues. I have always had great respect for people that go through the great efforts to become EMTs, Paramedics, Nurses, as well as doctors. It is such a shame that after all the faithful service you have provided that you would have to hide the fact you are a nurse because of the crazies out there. You have my respect!!!!!!!!!!!

I echo my friends' kudos and respect. My wife was a nurse, luckily just retired before the Covid debacle. My daughter is an oncology nurse. I have a number of cousins who went into nursing, and several of them have been on the front lines since the Pandemic. We know what's going on here at our household, and we all join in lifting up our healthcare heroes. My heart is with you!
