I am looking to replace an anciet Dell Dimension 8400.  Given its age, I had not gamed much lately, but would like to get back into it.  In researching the forum, I came across a discussion regarding an older ODE level 1 as compared to the current one.  The only difference I could see was the current version has a GTX 670 while the old one had an AMD 7850.  The old version was $200 cheaper and in that thread Alex mentioned that DS would be building that configuration for a while.

Both version are within my budget (cheaper is always better), but my current monitor is only 1650x1080, so I wonder if the GTX 670 is overkill?  Also, it looks like the motherboard supports crossfire, but not SLI, so going the AMD route may also permit me to pick up another 7850 as needed to "future-proof" a bit.

I guess I also need official confirmation that the older version can still be ordered as the thread I referenced is a couple of months old.

Expectations--some gaming at high settings (or high for a 1650x1080 monitor), web surfing, general usage like photos, mp3 storage, etc.

Thanks for your input.  I feel like I've already learned a lot from the friendly and helpful members.

Joe

Hi jokehoops.      I believe the older ODE 1 with the HD 7850 and i5-3570k chip for $1299 is config # 676207.

Here's alink that compares the 7850 to 670 at various resolutions.  The 670 is better but depending on the games you play and the settings you can be happy ith, the 7850 might be great.  This link maxes out most games, but high settings plays great.

Good Luck.

Thanks.  It looks like that for my monitor the 7850 should be plenty.  At least until I am certain that I am recommitting to PC gaming.

The GPU is the only difference right?  They both have the i5-3570k.

Thanks again.  Perhaps I'll put the savings towards a new monitor . . .

So my ODE level 1 has arrived. I received an email saying that the OC came out to 4.2 ghz. How do I confirm that? I ran a diagnostic at "can i run it" and it shows the cpu at 3.4 ghz. I ran the CPU-Z and it is also showing 3.4 (best I can tell).

So how can I be sure the cpu is actually overclocked as specified?

Thanks.

i think I figured it out. Should have searched before I posted. Looks like the system needs to be understress for oc to kick in.

Anyway, computer arrived early and has worked like a charm. Thanks DS!
