Hi guys,
Technology sure changes fast don't it? lol I have an older Viewsonic monitor w/standard VGA connection on it. I am planning on ordering a 8800GTX 768meg card. My monitor can run 1280x1024 and this is the resolution I typically use. Am I going to have a bad mismatch using this monitor and this card? What is to gain by getting a new monitor that supports the newer hookup to the card? I am so behind on the times, its been almost 5 years since I've done much with puters and way behind on the learning curve. Thanks for all your help Roger |

DVI offers the better image quality but most won't notice the difference at all.

Are you talking about a flat panel or a CRT?
I have a new 21" Viewsonic CRT that I use with an 8800GTS. The pair work great with a converter dongle. The real mismatch between your vid adaptor and your monitor is that the card has way too much memory; for now..... When the Viewsonic croaks or you get tired of it, you'll have the video RAM you need to trade up to a higher resolution display. Edited by Bill the Cat - 07 Jan 2008 at 9:12pm |

All video cards come with a VGA to DVI converter, you don't need to switch your monitor.

What do you gain with a new monitor? Bigger Resolutions. People who are serious graphic geeks and like playing on larger screens (and perhaps prefer the wide-screen aspect) will find it quite fun. Honestly, at 1280x1024, you're wasting that GTX - and may do just as well getting an 8800GT and saving the pennies. MANY of the gamers here have 24" or larger screens running 1920x1200 or larger resolutions.. it may seem trivial and petty at first.. but you learn to love it :) --Akkim |

You'll be fine with the GTX and the adapter for the analog connection. If your PC only supports a single video card and you run the latest games that might be the best way to go. Since my new PC supports the dual SLI mode, I went with two 8800GT's and upgraded my 19" VGA LCD monitor to a 22" wide screen (1680 x 1050) with the DVI input. There is always a small loss in quality when down converting video signals from digital to analog.
