Hi guys, Im purchasing a new sytem from DSO here very shortly. Im trying to understand everything and make it as good as i can within my budget. My question is about using the on-borard audio built into the mobo, or getting a actual sound card. Right now i had the Razer Barracuda AC-1 selected, but i wasnt sure if i would even need it. I was just going to use the sound for some games, RTS mostly, and playing music files CDs and downloaded files. Im have my own speakers, so i wont be getting any from here. just curious will it be that big of a difference, and if i do get the sound card, will i have any problems hooking up my speakers with the system, i.e. driver issues, not being compatible, or any other issues? Will having the sound card Improve sound quality noticabley? the speakers i will be using are Logitech Z-2300 200Watt 2.1 speakers. THX certified. My ticket number is 227765 if anyone would like to see what my setup will be. DST4ME did that for me, nice person

your mobo comes with:
High Definition Audio Enjoy high-end sound system on your PC! The onboard 8-channel HD audio (High Definition Audio, previously codenamed Azalia) CODEC enables high-quality 192KHz/24-bit audio output, jack-sensing feature, retasking functions and multi-streaming technology that simultaneously sends different audio streams to different destinations. You can now talk to your partners on the headphone while playing a multi-channel network games. All of these are done on one computer. S/PDIF-out on Back I/O Port This motherboard provides convenient connectivity to external home theater audio systems via coaxial and optical S/PDIF-out (SONY-PHILIPS Digital Interface) jacks. It allows to transfer digital audio without converting to analog format and keeps the best signal quality. have a look here I'm with HM on this one, the current integrated sounds are more then enough for me. |

The more I hear from average users, I believe that audio cards are best appreciated by true music lovers and discerning ears. That is, audiophiles or those who are sensitive to digital artifacts. If you don't really notice the difference between an mp3 and a CD, you don't really need a sound card. If mp3s are hard for you to listen to on a player such as an iPod, then you need a sound card. I'm with Daygn... LOL!
I want an Asus Xonar. I just love the sound of a burr brown DAC. I've had 2 DACs with Burr Browns.. still have one... and 2 analog devices. I've also had a few bitstreams, but Burr Browns are the most musical. |

I have a question regarding onboard sound vs stand alone card. In the "old days" in a ddition to sound quality a card like creative would free up the cpu by a fair amount thus making the option of a sound card viable. Any info on the cpu usage if any onboard sound requires vs said stand alone card? DO these new MB's <evga x 58> have built in processors that take the load off the cpu?
