I am not sure where to post this, being new to the site, so sorry if this is not the correct place. I am in the market for a new gaming rig and have narrowed it down to a local custom computer builder and DS, however I must admit I am leaning towards DS for numerous reasons. Now, my question is this, I would consider myself a gamer. I currently play WoW alot and occassionally CoD4. I have been told by friends that XP Pro is the way to go for gaming machines for stability reasons, but I really love the way Vista looks and want to mess around with the things it can do, but at the same token, I do not want to mess with my gaming. LOL
So any input would be greatly appreciated, especially fellow gamers. Edited by BigLou - 19 Dec 2007 at 11:52pm |

If you like Vista go ahead and get it. New fixes have made it compatible with pretty much everything. You will see a small increase in performance with XP.

I'd wait another 2-3 weeks to see if any of the tech sites do a review of the performance difference with the new service packs that were released. If it's true about what they've said for the XP SP3 then the small has turned into medium.
Vista is shiney and new but it's a drain on your system, but it is what games will be made around for the nex 2-3 years.

Great advice from all of you..thank you very much...I may just wait to see the reviews on XP S3...This may very well be the deciding factor.

Vista pros: Looks nice.
The sidebar gadgets are cool. DX 10. Vista Cons: Sluggish performance next to XP. Behaves like a new OS. Things Vista will not do regardless of what those Mac commercials might lead you to believe: Cause spontaneous combustion.
Lead to throat polyps.
Kill your pets.
Seriously, it does still have some rough spots, and I cannot say I have had a trouble free experience with it. Then again, I can't say I had a trouble free experience with XP.
I honestly think it comes down to how much value you place on DX10. If you want/need DX10 support now, get Vista. If you are using the comp to game and don't care about DX10, get XP, because in my experience, when it comes to gaming, Vista offers *nothing* more than a facelift over XP, and that eye candy comes at the price of frames per second.
The nice thing is, you can always install Vista later. Set aside a 35GB partition on your HDD, and if you decide a year from now that you can't live without it, pick up an OEM disk for ~$100at that point. Maybe in a year, M$ will have made good on all of the performance promises they made for Vista.

Anybody running Vista x64? If so, what problems have you encountered. Among those my research has shown so far is:
1. Some programs using USB connector like the Palm smart phones to synch to computer don't support 64 bit USB port. So only way to hook the phone to the computer is through bluetooth. I assume there are 64 bit BT dongles.
2. My online backup program through Iron Mountain (Connected) does not ahve a 64 bit program so can't use them at all.
3. Is there a 64 bit TWAIN driver?
4. My old webcam? Most likely scractch that as it connects through USB.
5. My computer is hooked to an Aficio printer/copier/scanner. Looks like there is a 64 bit PCL-6 driver.
6. Effect on games? Unknown.
Thoughts.

1] I have a Pocket PC USB docking station that works fine with Vista64.
2] There are backup apps out that do work. One I use is ONEcare.
3] My MP6000 canon scanner/printer works fine.
4] Haven't tried my Logitech cam yet. I ran out of usb connectors :(.
5] You should be set then.
6] Lots of games work. Some are a little slower then when running on XP.
Take a read of the "Vista64Experience" thread it lists a lot of apps.

If someone choses XP over Vista today, at what point in the future will they HAVE to install Vista to play new games? In other words, how long before games are released that can't be played on XP?

Never... you would probably be running Windows 8 by the time most game developers decide to stop supporting Windows XP.

I hope this question isn't too dumb, but, will XP ever be DirectX10 (and beyond) compliant? Or will it stop at DirectX9? If XP will eventually support 10, then I'm really not seeing a reason to go Vista right now. Thank you to everyone for making these forums immensely helpful!

and this is why there's google... ;)
no, XP will NEVER be dx10 compliant. Sure, there are people that will strip down aspects of DX10 and try to make it work on xp, but bottom line, XP is just too old of a technology to properly take advantage of DX10.
