I was wondering if people would be willing to share their opinions on my build. The way I have it is pretty much at my budget limit for the moment. I guess my big question is with the video card option. Is there a better option than the x2 ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB?

thats a tight budget, I say save another $300 to $400 and get a system that you can use for a long time and spend very little upgrading over the years.

Would I not be able to play games like Crysis with the 2 ATI cards? The only things I'd probably upgrade in the future on this configuration would be the video card and adding more memory.

well crysis for example is very cpu intensive, you are not ocing teh cpu so there is going to be a big difference between 920 at 2.66GHz and 920 at 3.6GHz.
with crosfire 3850 you would be pulling like 20fps in your resolution in crysis, a 260gtx will do much much better, even a 8800 gt will beat a 3850 |

I would agree, but I'm thinking about 2x CrossFire Dual (ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB), and not the 3850. Any thoughts?

sorry I meant to say 3870, the difference between 3850 oced and 3870 in crysis is like 2fps.

Achtung91, while DST4ME may be right, I respect your tight budget.
I'm having the same issue. Edited by pwcorgi - 22 Mar 2009 at 11:04pm |

Yeah, it may sound lame, but my wife isn't to keen on me spending $1,650. I figure with a good proc, psu and mobo I can always upgrade the video card and memory in the future. |

I know what you mean about the wife not being keen, my budget originaly started much lower but I slowly got sucked into better components and a more reputable compant :)
Anyways do I what I did, get a 0% interest card for 12 months and pay it off that way, $1600 or $2000, not that big of a deal that way and you have a machine with more legs

If money is super tight you might want to consider one of the Core2Duo or Quads with DDR2 Memory. A stock Q9550 is about 20% less powerful than a stock core i7 920 but youd save about $300 across the chip/motherboard/and RAM. Thats $300 dollars you could sink towards a decent GPU which is really going to determine the lion's share of your game performance, and if you want you could put part of that into a better cooler and a overclock and you could probably approach core i7 920 levels of performance.
Biggest downside to this setup is that the C2D chipset for Intel is essentially mature. Intel isn't going to develop any newer more powerful chips for that socket so this would be essentially a one shot deal, you wouldn't be able to upgrade the CPU in 2010 or 2011 like you would with a 1366 socket chip (core i7).
BUT
On a tight budget an OC Q9550, 4GB of decent DDR2 RAM and maybe a pair of 4850 GPU's isn't a monster but its definitely respectable.
