That is an example of a card reader.  It allows you to transfer data between variouus sources like a USB flash drive or a memory card or chip from a camera and other items.

Optical drive reader/writer: I assume you are referring to the DVD-ROM reader and writer options.  A reader will only read the information on a DVD or CD, like placing a music CD or movie DVD in a player and listening or watching the music or movie.  A writer will allow you to copy (write) information onto a DVD or CD for your own use, such as creating your music CD mixes as an example.

reader can only read cds/DVDs.

a writer can write to cds/DVDs.

for example with a reader you can put in a music CD and listen to it, but you can't put your own files on that CD.

with a writer, you can get your own blank cds and put your music or pictures or etc., on it.

the save with DVDs.

card reader can read different cards, most common is the SD card, the SD card is used in cell phones, cameras, etc.

if you have the card reader you can just remove the SD card from your phone or camera and stick in the reader, then you can open them in your PC and move files back and forth between the two.

At the very least you would need a DVD-ROM reader, since most games and software come on CD's and DVD's when you purchase them at a store, that is how you load the software from the CD or DVD onto your computer.

If you want to put any information onto a CD or DVD, you would need a DVD-Rom writer.  If you have no plans to do so, then a reader would be sufficient for your needs.

In regards to the Card Reader, do you or someone in your family have a Digital Camera?  If so, it most likely has a memory stick or memory card and that can be used to transfer the pictures from the Digital Camera onto your computer.  If you don't have a camera, you may not need the Card Reader, but for a cheap price, it's not a bad option to have on your computer if you should ever need it.

The Card Reader is entirely optional.

The DVD-ROM Reader is the basic essential required to be on any computer these days.

The DVD-ROM Writer is entirely optional.

Is this a reader and a writer in one? DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition)

the "±" signifies that it can do both DVD formats, minus format "-" and plus format "+".

your see the first DVD format was "-"R, then later came an updated version "+"R, so this DVD drive can read and write to both.

now regular CD or DVD that you can write to, is a "±R". the "R" CD/DVD media, you can write to, but once you write to them you can't go back and erase what you wrote and write something else.

the "RW" CD/DVD media, you can write to and then go back and erase what you wrote and write something else to them.

(LightScribe Edition) is a technology where the drive can scribe text onto the top of the CD/DVD this looks cool and you no longer need to buy labels and then put them in your printer and then print the label of your CD/DVD.

the "DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x" signifies that it can write to a DVD at maximum speed of 20x, and it can write to a CD at speed of 48x.

here you can see:

DVD-R

DVD+R

DVD+RW

DVD+RW

CD-R

CD-RW

yes you are correct.

let me just point out to use the LightScribe feature you will need to get CDs/DVDs that are made to work with light scribe, but you can use regular CD/DVDs to write to if you like, you just won't be able to label them with the lightscribe.
