We have ordered 4 Digital Storm PC's so far, which run our model much faster than any of the other PC's we have. The most important aspect is individual processor speed, because the main program we use is a single-threaded. We run energy/economic number-crunching forecast models. Each PC we have ordered has been as fast or faster than the last. I have not been keeping up with the latest processors that have come out in the last 6 months, but our last computer was overclocked to 4.9 with a 2700k.

Budget:
$5,000 or less

Expectations:
To be at least as fast as our last Digital Storm purchase (4.9 GHz).

Usage:
We run energy and economic forecasting models.

Special Needs:
The main programming language we use is single-threaded. Therefore, individual processor speed is even more important than the total number of cores

Saved Ticket #: 645919 (this is the last PC we ordered in January)
712814 (it made me re-save it as this number, perhaps some components are no longer available from the previous build)

Specifications (this is for 712814):

Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Black OPS HailStorm Edition Exterior

Processor: Intel Core i7 2700K 3.50 GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core)

Motherboard: ASUS Maximus IV Extreme (Intel P67 Chipset) (New & Improved B3 Revision Without SATA 3G Issue)

System Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested)

Power Supply: 1050W Corsair Pro Silver 1050HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible)

Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (600GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: 320 Series)

Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (Model: Black Edition)

Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x)

Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections)

Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB (Includes PhysX Technology) (EVGA Edition)

Cooling: H20: Stage 4: Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System: CPU Only

H20 Tube Color:Red Tubing with High-Performance Fluid (UV Lighting Reactive)

Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans

Boost Processor: Stage 3: Overclock CPU 4.9GHz to 5.2GHz (Requires Extreme Series Motherboard)

Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-Bit Edition)

Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD)

Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty

Thanks,
Louis

Hi alvin........ In the last 6 months the Ivy Bridge, i7-3770k chip was released.    I don't believe the Ivy Bridge will oc to as high as your Sandy Bridge chip, the i7-2700k without excess heat.    The p67 mobo DS no longer has, so the z77 Deluxe would be it.      For your needs, the z77 Deluxe with the i7-2700k would be the best bet unless you special ordered.       I don't think you'll get better than what you have now but I suggest asking DS over the phone what your needs are.      That's unfortunately the best info I can give you.   Best of luck and maybe others can chime in to help.      I would like to know the results.

I think ds could oc a 3930k or 3960x to 5ghz or more they will most likely charge a high premium for this as it will take time to oc a cpu that high. If you want a faster oc then your old rig sandy bridge extreme is your best bet, for the cooling get stage 4 but have them use a larger radiator like the 360 instead of the standard 240mm. With some trial and error ds should beable to achieve this high oc, since graphic card is not really needed go for a cheap one and save the money.

Hi Alvin,

DS will OC the 3770 to 4.8. You won't see any difference between a 4.9 and a 4.8 OC. Your best approach is to talk directly to DS and find out what they will do for you.

You can get a higher OC with the 2700K but then you face the availability of the processor and mobo. Sometime in the future you may have a hard time finding one if you have a failure.

I don't know what program you are running but the 3960X may be a good choice for you. I think DS will do a 4.8 OC and it has a 15Mb L3 cache. Even though you are using one thread the larger cache should help with your processing. It is an expensive way to go but you could save some money with your other components.

You probably don't need a 600Gb SSD and the Intel 520 will be way faster than your Intel 320. You don't need the 1050 power supply. I would stick with the Stage 4 LC system.

Great. It looks like the 2700k is still the way to go. I do not see any reason to pay extra for the newer processors when they will not clock higher than the Sandy Bridge.

Sounds like a phone call is the way to go; I will ask about a larger radiator.

Another vote for calling in. I was unaware that the 520 is faster than the 320. We do a substantial amount of disk writing though, and often run out of room with our 600 GB SSD. I was actually hoping that Intel had a larger SSD than 600 by now. We could get two 600's, but that's a lot of money just for some added convenience.

Thanks everyone for the responses :)
