the q9550 is a penryn chip, with socket LGA775, that is the socket your mombo supports, so you can only move up to the highest CPU in that socket.

i7 is going to be socket LGA1366 so that will not work with your mombo.

the highest chip in socket LGA775 is the qx9770, no new extreme chips for that socket will be made.

Really?? I did not expect intel to stop making newer 775 cpus so soon. I though they were going to take them all the way up to 4 Gz before they stopped making the core 2 quad series? So in the future its going to be $1000 + to upgrade my cpu?

there is a limit they hit back in 2003 that they could not go to 4.0GHZ or higher, it was then that everybody turned to multiple cores.

Intel pretty much has a road-map of what you can expect in the future so we know, for example, back in march or when it was that the qx9770 came-out, we knew that it was the last extreme chip to come-out for this socket and Intel did not have anything higher to come-out.

lol if they could have gone over 4.0GHz and not burn the chip then right now there would not be quads, there would be a battle over speed, like it was in the old days.

I have the last chip Intel made that was close to 4.0GHz and thats the p4 3.8ghz, that summer I was waiting for the p4 4.0GHz that was suppose to be out that year in Nov, but in august they announced that the 4.0GHz was running too hot and was not stable. So I had to settle for the 3.8GHz, I had no idea then, that it make everybody go multiple cores.
