Hi Folks,
I ordered a QX9770 w/mobo fsb 1600mhz and 1600mhz (OCZ) ram. Both were to be OC'd. The box is still in phase-2 testing. After several days, I called and DS said that they were having trouble getting the memory to OC w/stability, so I said to just forget OC'ing the memory and OC the CPU. That too has been in testing for several days.
Since DS does this for a living, we assume they are experts at it. This would seem to imply that they more or less know what the final settings for any given chip/mobo/ram combination will be, which would imply that getting a stable OC should be a relatively quick task (and hence the low charge for doing it).
Should I be worried that it's taking so long (perhaps a batch of chips/ram/mobo that is w/in manufacturer specs, but in the low end of the "range")?
Thoughts?
Thanks!,

all chips are not the same, so they all don't oc the same speed.
yes if you could have a chipo that is w/in manufacturer specs, but in the low end of the "range" if you will. but worry about nothing and let them do their thing, they are taking their time to get you the best results you don't really need the ram oc at that speed, just ask them for the ram fan instead Edited by DST4ME - 24 Oct 2008 at 12:10pm |

I talked to Chris, he said if customers don't ask to OC the ram they don't touch the ram settings.

I understand how hard it is to wait, but I wouldn't be worried.
From the procedures I have seen them post, they go through a long stability test once the OC appears stable which includes running stress tests overnight. If something goes wrong with the tests they would lose a full day to redo the overclock and start the tests over again.
Unfortunately, that is the only way to do it if you want to make sure the overclock doesn't cause problems down the road.

That was true with my system.
To get the "best" overclock Harley is right that you usually have to adjust RAM timings and voltages to get there, but you can still get a reasonably good overclock with RAM at it stock settings, which is what I believe DSO does.

well for his ram 1600 they don't need to adjust the ram for a good OC, its already up there.

I think I'm just going to be thankful that the market didn't tank 1000 points today, and try not to think about this system for another week. Thanks all !!!

The purpose of adjusting the voltages and timings on the RAM is not to get the RAM faster, but to get the CPU/RAM to cooperate for the highest CPU speed.
Small adjustments to RAM timings/voltage can allow obtaining a higher CPU overclock. Unfortunately, its mostly trial and error and takes a long time which is probably why DSO doesn't do it.

I know that but with his setup they don't need to adjust anything to get good OC, which is why you have an option to OC/adjust the ram or they can adjust it without touching the ram.
I'm discussing what DS does. |

Fair enough.
I am just trying to clear up why DSO does what they do, and to clarify that what Harley posted about adjusting RAM settings when you overclock is a good idea, even if you don't want to OC the RAM.

I dont think ram timings and speed are somehow linked. So OCing the timings of the ram would increase performance reguardless of whether or not the rams speed is more then enough for a CPU OC. Reguardless ive found out that OCing the timings is too much risk vs reward, you do get slightly faster performance with it, but the chances of instability are moderate to high. And really if youre doing it for that ram fan...you can buy it on newegg for like 20 bucks, and it just clips on..=P

I wasn't doing it for the fan - I was just trying to get more from the CPU - apparently it was really hard for them to get it stable, so I bailed on OC'ing the ram and am just having it done for the cpu. Since they had already attached it, and extra cooling never hurts, I told them to leave the fan.
Thanks to all !!! |
