I received my new computer from DS tonight and am in the process of installing programs and the such.  Came packaged wonderfully and booted right up when I plugged everything in.  I ordered the CPU overclock option and was wondering if this means its OC to 3.20?  Im new to the overclocking thing and dont know where to look to check the actual overclock they applied.

Hmm this is saying Q6600 @ 2.4 Ghz

Core Speed 21.33 Mhz
Multiplier x6.0
Bus Speed 355.5 Mhz

Does this mean its still clocked at 2.4?

Yes its overclocked. The Q6600 as a base multiplier of 9 and bus normally is 266. Yours is 355.5 x 9.

Your examples are showing a mulitplier of 6 because speedstep is running. That is a feature with intel chips that when its idle and not getting any load what so ever it will drop its multiplier (9 to 6 in this case) to save on energy and excess heat.

266 x 9 = 2.394 (stock speed)  355.5 x 9 = 3.1995 or 3.2

So you have an overclock of 3.2 which is pretty nice.

What type of cooling option do you have by the way?

You got a pretty nice overclock, must either be a good luck CPU or a pretty aggressive overclock. Wonder what your cores are running at under load.

Get a free program like core temp and then a stressing program like prime 95 and stress the CPU for a while, and watch how high its temps get. You can also sorta check out how aggressive the overclock is by checking out in CPU-Z the voltage being fed to the processor

haha this poor guy, all he wanted to know is if he was OC'd; but yea, about prime95, i didnt find this to be the best load-temp tester, maybe you have to leave it running for a long time, but i always got higher temps out of PCmark, and peaks from everest.

or

all of these are safe for your computer. what you want to do is open coretemp and snap a screenshot of what your cores are running at in idle, so close all your programs but coretemp and wait about 2 minutes, take a screenshot, (printscreen, paste in paint) then open up prime95 or pcmark and let them run with coretemp off to the side, watch carefully and try to grab a second screenshot while your temps are showing as high as possible, then paste that into paint also.
sunfighter would like you to report back with these findings lol Smile

as far as it being aggressive, the q6600 G0 is showing suprisingly high averages for overclocking these days, its a wonderful chipCool

Heres a link to my idle temps

I DLed the Prime 95 and selected torture test and the option which says it tests heat looks like it cycled heavy loads between the cores on the CPU.  I let it run for about 30 minutes.  The highest I saw any of the temps reach during this was core 2, which seemed to run the hottest, it reached 70C like 3 times, mostly it sat in the mid to high 60s

Are these temps bad?  I was assuming since the company set it up and they have a 3 year warranty that it would be fine, are my assumptions wrong?  I played WoW for hours today and it ran like a champ no problems at all.

Im at work and forgot my info, so I re-registered with a new name hehe.  Following the advice on some other threads I updated my case a bit.

I have the 750 case on my new build from DSO.  My CPU was running Idle at about 50 degrees C and while playing WoW it was running at about 64-66 C.  I have the Q6600 OC to 3.2.   Bought the 3 bay fan kit and bought the slipstream 120mm fan after reading the recommendations on this site along with the glowing reviews the fan received on Newegg.  I cannot believe the difference, its amazing.  I installed this last night, took out the filter (I blow out my case a couple times a month and dont keep it on the floor where they tend to attract more dust), my idle was running at about 39 C and playing WoW it ran at about 46 C.  I would say anyone with the 750 case should run out and get this today.

Heres a pic I took of the front of the machine with the fan installed on the 750 case.  I really doesnt look to bad at all on this case.  I stayed away from any neon on my computer, its in my bedroom and when I sleep at night I can do without the whole room glowing.  I had to use pull ties on the back side to secure it as the bay didnt have holes for the screws but the front of the bays lined right up with the screw holes.

Once im finished paying the puppy off i think my next mod will be to somehow get a hole in the side by the video cards to add another 120mm fan to get ready for an SLI upgrade.  I got a little bit before I got to worry about that though.  I wonder how hard it is to cut that clear plastic cover on the side.

no but that does look really nice. i must say i disagree with you on the neons though, i sleep with my computer at the foot of my bed (450i case, lit stock fan and blue cathode lights) and i must say that the soft blue lighting throughout the room is quite niceSmile

Acrylic is *tough*. DO NOT try and cut through it with a hole saw, or anything similar. I took it to a glass and plastics shop and had them do it. If you have access to a CNC you could try a helical cut with a ballmill, I know for sure that works with Lexan. If they machine the same, you really need to watch the temps especially when the tooling for hits the material. Keep air on it at all times. You could also take it to any shop that does water jet work.

Here's the thread where I show my modified case with a side fan:

Thats nice.  Ill have to check around my town for a glass shop.  I know there are a couple auto glass places that do windshields and windows but im not sure if they would cut the glass.

The material is acrylic. Make sure they have experience cutting it and have the capacity to replace the panel if it all goes wrong when they try and put the hole in. I brought in a 120mm fan with me to use as a template for the mounting holes when I had mine done. If the hole is a touch rough, that's normal. I used some black automotive U-channel door trim to address the cosmetics.

Primarily production runs of hardware and frames for containers, but we get the odd job every now and then that requires a little bit of "creative thinking". I machine aluminum, copper, steel, and stainless steel as well as the occasional run of various plastics. But.... that's a wee bit off topic. Tongue

Remember, that each individual processer can operate at diffrent clock speeds.  The same chip model that runs at stock 3.0 GHz could have one that can't be overclocked, one which can reach 3.2, and one that can reach 3.8.  It's an inexact science.

That being said, Intels new line of chips are clearly clocked conservativly, as you can almost always squeeze .4 ghz more than the stock speeds are set to.
